"Kelly didn't care to be in with the 'in' crowd," says Deidre Shaha, Kelly's coach from Burleson Middle School. "If those kids gave her a hard time, she gave it right back. If she liked you, she liked you. If she didn't, she didn't."
2. The bubbly blonde loved volleyball, but gave Deidre dirty looks when she made her play basketball. "I can remember her sitting in front of the basketball team and giving me the ugliest face you could possibly imagine. I had said something to her that she obviously didn't like and later she let me know about it. I just gave her a hug."
3. Despite the drama, Kelly and Deidre eventually grew close. In fact, Kelly even sang "The Lord's Prayer" at Deidre's wedding.
4. "Kelly would come to school in flannel pajamas and slippers," her history and economics teacher, Brad Allard tells
J-14. "She wasn't very vain about her appearance. She cared, but she didn't spend an hour in front of the makeup mirror."
5. When Kelly was starring in the musical
Brigadoon, the lights and sound went out. But Brad says the future superstar played it cool. "She just laughed and made the best of it."
6. During one episode of
American Idol, "Kell-Bell" held a press conference in the teacher's room and refused to begin until he showed up. "They pulled me out of my classroom full of kids, and I walked into a room filled with cameras. I was like, 'Whoa!'" Brad recalls.
7. Both Kelly and Mr. Allard are huge U2 fans. "When she met Bono, it was like meeting the Pope!" he says.
8. "She wasn't afraid to make fun of herself. She could definitely be labeled the class clown," says Scott Shaha, Kelly's high school geography teacher.
9. Kelly didn't like when anyone talked badly about Mariah Carey, Scott spills. "I was very anti-Mariah, and Kelly was a huge Mariah fan," he adds. "She talked me into playing her music during the last two minutes of class...once."
10. Kelly invited Scott and his family to the premiere of
From Justin To Kelly. She wasn't very happy about the movie," Scott reveals. "She knew it wouldn't do well, but she was contractually obligated to do it. She said, 'This is the last piece of bad anything I'm going to do.'"
