 REM reunite for Hall of Fame | |
Drummer Bill Berry joined his former REM bandmates last night as the group was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The reunited group, consisting of Berry who left in 1997 Michael Stipe, Mike Mills and Peter Buck, performed a number of hits at the ceremony.
Included in the Hall of Fame are "legendary performers, producers, songwriters, disc jockeys and others who have made rock and roll the force that it is in our culture", according to its website.
Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder inducted the group, saying: "They used every colour on the palette, they invented colours on their own and they put up this huge mural of music and sound and emotion."
After Stipe and Mills gave acceptance speeches, the group performed Begin the Begin, Gardening At Night and Man on the Moon (with Vedder on vocals).
They then moved into Iggy and The Stooges' I Wanna Be Your Dog and the closing number People Have The Power.
The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, who inducted the Ronettes into the Hall of Fame earlier in the evening, also performed on People Have The Power.
REM's original foursome has recorded a cover of John Lennon's track #9 Dream for the Instant Karma CD to raise funds for Amnesty International.
