Exclamation A word of advice...

...if you're thinking about merging partitions on your harddrive:

BACKUP!

Just lost two partitions worth of data; quite a bunch of applica-
tions, my beloved Dilbert episodes, all my Star Trek movies (for-
tunately I have been able to get these from otherwhere), a
bunch of pictures I really didn't want to lose, and the list goes
on. I've done it before, the merging - without any data ending
up being corrupt and unrecoverable (believe me, I tried many
things to try to recover it, but only like 0.5% (or less) succeed-
ed) - but thanks to a bad block on the drive, it failed !

you know..I will do it after i'll get more space on my hard drive. I have like 7 GB. 1 is free. 2 GB are for my games, videos and music and 4 are for microsoft office and all the programs installed.
All the important stuff is on my cds already..so HA!

But yeah,i feel sorry for Dilbert.

Fortunately I seem to have most of the Dilbert episodes back
on queue again... and if I'm lucky... someone from the house
still have the ones he downloaded from he *crosses fingers*.

I also did the merging because I didn't have much space left
on either of the partitions, but heh... late last night I ended
up having ~50 Gb free space... at the expense of above men-
tioned .

It's the most 'annoying' things I lost, files I can't remember
where I got, and some files I know I won't be able to get
again... felt pretty beat down last night... gets better every-
time I get a file redownloaded though .

question:

i was thinking of running linux on a partition... could i still access media.... ie: mp3's from my windows partition... or is it possible to make a seperate partition just for media so i could access it?

Just came to think about the saying:

"Real men doesn't backup, they just cry more..."

That should be possible by mounting the Windows partition
with Samba (smbmount, I think the command is). Been quite
a while since I worked with Linux, and even back then it was
only in school, so the fancy technical details I wouldn't be the
one to dish out... but I know it can be done that one.

What exactly is this partition business? Is it getting rid of dead files or something?

I admire y'all who know how to do that. Too complicated for my blood. I didn't understand much of anything those tutorials said...

With PowerQuest's Partition Magic working with partitions is
actually as easy as... umm... scratching your ass... or... well...
it is .
