i see no sense in changing something that's been around for so long, and that's commonplace at 90% of message boards on the internet.
many members here realize that postcounts are not valid indicators of prestige. on the other hand, many others think that quantity takes precedence over quality.
now that there are no rules here regarding dipshitting, people can make pointless posts to their hearts' content. if they get a kick out of having a high postcount, great. if they think it's a status symbol, they can think that, too. who are they hurting? sure, over half the posts here are essentially useless and are contributing nothing to discussion. but it's not the postcount's fault, as a board is only as good as the material posted on it by members.
pointless posting somehow evolved into a huge problem here. but it's become so deeply ingrained into the psyche of the board that i doubt abolishing the postcounts is going to change that at all. solutions are not always so simple as taking away the cause of the problem. |
