NEW YORK CITY, NY - (18 November 2003) - The Leaky Cauldron (www.the-leaky-cauldron.org), a non-profit, international Harry Potter-themed news site, is uniting Harry Potter fans all over the world via its "Get a Clue 2" campaign: T-shirt sales to benefit Book Aid International (www.bookaid.org). The effort aims to raise thousands of dollars in support of literacy.

Last year, in order to proxy a Sotheby’s bid on a card donated by J.K. Rowling, on which she had written clues about the then-unreleased fifth book in her Harry Potter series, thousands of Harry Potter fans came together through The Leaky Cauldron, which incorporated as Leaky Inc. in order to solicit donations and bid as one. TLC was outbid by an anonymous American, but the web site had pledged to donate its collected monies to Book Aid International, regardless of the auction’s outcome. Therefore, in December 2002, Leaky Inc. donated $24,000 to literacy funding on behalf of Harry Potter fans around the globe.

TLC’s effort was lauded and assisted worldwide by CBBC Newsround, BBC’s Radio Five Live, CNN, Ireland’s Spin1038, the New York Times, U.S. News, YM.com, the Daily Telegraph, the Scotsman, and the Guardian, among many other global media outlets.

Book Aid International wrote after the event: “Philanthropic Harry Potter fans who helped to assemble the bid on behalf of the Leaky Cauldron website will be pleased to know that the final amount we received from the bid was a remarkable £14,202.93, every penny of which will help to fund our vital work in Kenya and Eritrea.”

The editors at TLC have decided to make a tradition of last year’s holiday-season generosity. Leaky Inc. is therefore soliciting donations again, this time through the sale of Leaky Cauldron T-shirts (which have been designed by Natalie McKeever and may be seen on the site). T-shirts are being sold for $10 and all monies raised (minus costs of printing the T-shirts and PayPal/wiring fees) will go directly to benefit Book Aid International.

“If we are Harry Potter fans, then we are advocates of literacy,” entreats Megan Morrison, Treasurer of Leaky Inc. “Let's demonstrate again that we not only love these books, but that we live the spirit of them.”

Leaky Cauldron T-Shirts may be purchased by visiting www.the-leaky-cauldron.org. Additional contributions may be made via PayPal.com (through account name "Leaky, Inc." or e-mail "donations@the-leaky-cauldron.org") until November 30, 2003, and can be mailed to Leaky Inc., P.O. Box 7308, New York, NY 10150, as long as monies are received by November 30, 2003. Wire transfer information can be obtained by contacting info@the-leaky-cauldron.org.
