In a way, yes, but with new features such as "targeting" and "magic shortcut". Targeting is self-explanatory, but magic shortcut allows you to assign a particular spell to a particular button. So if you assign "fire" to x, you press L1 then x to release a fire spell without having to go through the menu. My guess is that battles are in ATB (Active Time Battle) and that there are no transitions when you go into battle, since it's an action RPG. Pretty hard if you aren't used to enemies sneeking up on you unlike in the random battles system (which I am used to. :riiight: )
