In short:
PNG = Portable Network Graphics; free format, lossless, allows transparency, allows more than 256 colors. The GIF "replacement".
GIF = Graphics Interchange Format; licensed format (until sometime next year), allows animation, limited to 256 colors.
JPEG = Joint Photographic Experts Group; free format, lossfull via compression, still images only, allows more than 256 colors.
