On August 1, 1956, a UW team of physicians and surgeons led by K. Alvin Merendino successfully performed the Pacific Northwest's first open-heart surgery. The procedure was performed at King County Hospital (now Harborview Medical Center) in Seattle. Merendino is viewed as one of the forefathers of American cardiothoracic surgery.

Ruth Wakefield invented chocolate chips (and chocolate chip cookies) in 1930. Wakefield ran the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Her new cookie invention was called the "Toll House Cookie." Her original cookies used broken-up bars of semi-sweet chocolate.

Actually it WAS White Christmas...but in 1998 Elton John's "Candle in the wind" beat it.
