That was just one more problem Madonna had at the time, see the commercial got recorded first, then it was supposed to promote the video for like a prayer at that time, pepsi had no idea the way the video was going to look like or the controversy it was going to cause.
The moment MTV air the video all hell got loose, which was the following day after the pepsi commercial(sunday).
On Monday phones were ringing off the hook at pepsi headquarters from people demanding them to pull out the sponsorship with Madonna or face a worldwide boycott.
As always pepsi chicken out paid Madonna the $5 million and decided not to air the video anymore.
Religious groups were offended by burning crosses, and Madonna kissing a saint. Not to mention they were on her because they said that "papa dont preach" was encouraging teenage pregnancy.
