Default Bringing up Chrildren as vegan?

Well its got me thinking, I read an interview with Lady Heather McCartney and she said that she was bringing up her daughter as a vegan, she is only 2 and a half! Is that right?

Surely the child will be missing out on something?

Hmm... I don't support the idea of vegan diets. I believe in balanced eating—moderate amounts of meat, reasonable amounts of vegetables, etc. I think moderation is key. (After all, our bodies are capable of processing both meat and vegetables, and benefit from a balance of both.)

It's more than likely that the child will miss out on some things. Protein can be found in food like tofu, but then... Will the child like tofu? Will it yield the same protein as meat?

Those are the nutritional concerns. But there are moral concerns as well. People all value different things. All I hope is that her child is given a choice in the matter, when she is mature enough to make it.

I'm sure it's safe for her...why would a mother bring her child up on a Vegan diet if it wasn't safe from her? And since it's Heather McCartney, I'm sure she's consulted with a dietician.

Well I think if Heather wants to be a vegan. Ok fine. Why make a decision for your child.

And nothing would surprise me about Heather these days.

The same could be said for people who feed their children meat and such...why not let the kid make the decision whether he or she wants to eat meat. Children can't make decisions like that so that's what parents are for.

I think you should expose children to everything at least a few times, so that they can make a choice as to what they like and what they don't like. You should also educate them on what is good and what is bad for your body. What you can eat regularly and what you can only take sporadically. Like, don't go eat 5 eggs a day. Common sense stuff.

I don't believe in diets made up by other people. No body is the same. If you want to diet, you should do it in accordance to what your body responds to. That is why it is good to know how your body deals with all the different sorts of food. Taking on a diet that some other dude made up is halfassing it. My opinion is that if you want the most out of your diet, you should make one up for yourself. You're the only one who knows best what your body can and can't take.

I just think at that age, Its important to give the child the nutrients that they need. Just because Heather has problems with milk (as she has often stated) she needs to think of her daughter. I think when the child is old enough, then let Beatrice make her own decision.

But it's not like this child will be deprived of nutrients because she doesn't drink milk, there are other ways to go about getting those nutrients. Also, I guess I just don't see the logic in a parent (who feels strongly about being a vegan) raising their children on a diet that they don't themselves believe in. That's like asking a devout Catholic NOT to raise their children in the same religious setting in which they were raised, or even raising them a different religoin. Of course, when the child is older they will be able to decide for themselves what's best for them (being a catholic, being a vegan...whatever), but as for now, I don't see the problem with it.

I've been a vegetarian ever since I was a child. However, my parents didn't make the choice for me, I did. I never liked the idea of eating meat and never adjusted to the taste either. I rarely ate meat before but I totally stopped it after Pre-School.

But yeah, it's kinda hard to get nutrients for a child without dairy products.

Have you people never heard of soy products? Have you never heard of people who can't eat or drink dairy products...they aren't malnourished. There are other ways to get nutrients.
