Guess what? Guys think Britney's hot! For our first annual survey, ELLEgirl teamed up with the fine folks at Yahoo! Search and mercilessly grilled 3,379 15- to -19-year-old boys across the country about what turns them on. Gather round, girls, 'cuz this is a real interesting read (i.e., Britney is only the beginning)....
We admit it - we like boys. Sure, sometimes they can be freaks, dogs and just annoying and really unfunny...but overall, we find them pretty indispensable. The thing is, sometimes we feel like we're frittering away valuable time that
could be spent watching reruns of
The Real World/Road Rules Challenge trying to figure out what the hell they're thinking. So we decided to just cut to the chase and ask: Like, are they really only hot for blondes with big boobs and pancake-flat tummies, and what's up with the whole Ashton/Demi love match, anyway? And, lo, the first ELLEgirl Sexy Survey was born.
So anyway, you think one guy is confusing? Hi. Try 3,379.
Take Britney Spears, our fair cover maiden. She was voted the sexiest chick in music, beating out a bunch of other hot mamas. Okay, that's not too shocking; the girl is crazy-sexy (Emphasis on
crazy! Kidding!) But then we asked how they felt about her in general: 35 percent said Britney was the most overexposed celebrity out there; 33 percent said she was overrated, and they just don't know her.
Meow. Meanwhile, 32 percent said she was the hottest girl on the planet, but 22 percent said she was an awful singer, and another 16 percent said she was a horrible dresser. And they say
girls are bitches?
Some stuff the guys said was totally predictable: Gentlemen do seem to prefer blondes with six-pack abs (hi again, Britney). They like girls to be shorter or the same height as they are, but almost never taller. (Clearly, none of these boys has ever actually
met a model in person - despite what they might tell you). Meanwhile, they're not crazy about makeup (a bunch don't know the diff between eye shadow and blush) but they
love perfume (okay - weird?). They say that wearing supershort skirts is a played-out way to get a guy's attention...though 34 percent also think that a micromini is the sexiest thing a girl can have in her closet. They don't like older girls, though some rather mature ladies top their list of hot celebs. They are attracted to girls who share their interests (fair enough), but a whole bunch also dig chicks who resemble their moms (and your name would be...Oedipus?).
Despite the inconsistencies, there's no reason to doubt the results of this survey: It was totally anonymous, which means there was no need for the guys to front, make jokes, try to impress their friends or act like they just didn't care. Plus, we weren't grading them - so there was no need to copy or cheat.
So what's our point? Well, for one thing, we recognize a boy's natural-born right to objectify a girl - within reason. After all, don't we do the same to them? We are not suggesting you dress all hoochie, join the cheerleading squad or give up the tambourine just to impress them. Lord, no. We simply want you to know what guys are thinking - so you, gentle reader, can further torture them. >
