Not that innocent, indeed: Britney Spears ups the ante with hotter photos and a sexier show. P.S. Hey, who's the new guy?
"Music is what's important to me," she told an Italian reporter. "If people gossip over my actions, I don't care."
One a.m. in the darkness of a Las Vegas club, and suddenly Britney Spears and her dancers come onstage unannounced to try out some new numbers. They quickly got down to some dirty dancing - same sex, opposite sex, who knows with all the writhing. "She was grinding on another girl," says an observer. "It seems intentionally aimed at shock value. She was definitely trying to be sexy - and it was not a failed attempt. She looked amazingly hot." Coming soon to an arena near you: Britney Spears, new and definitely not PG-rated.
Gearing up for the the Nov. 18th release of her fourth album,
In The Zone*, the former Mousketeer has been hard at work shedding the last of her pop-kitten innocence and refreshing herself into a mature 21-year-old sex object. Will she sound it too? On the new album, which she described to
Rolling Stone as "sensual...sexual," she'll be singing a duet w/ R. Kelly with the lyrics: "Oh, it's so hot, and I need some air/Boy don't stop, 'cause I'm halfway there."
Other not-too-subtle statements: In
W she posed like a designer-clad lap dancer and admitted she lost her vaunted virginity to ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake during their romance. ("I thought he was the one, I was wrong!") On the
Rolling Stone cover she's all but naked. And there has been some on unorthodox lip action. Five days before her Aug. 28th kiss with Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards set off a ruckus, she was spotted outside a rehearsal studio in L.A. sharing what appeared to be a smooch with her choreographer and backup dancer Columbus Short, 21. He's married.

Spears insists she's not repeating the ill-fated romance between Jennifer Lopez and
her backup dancer, Cris Judd. True, she and Short have since been spotted everwhere from a balcony at the Hotel Hassler in Rome, where she filimed a Pepsi spot with Pink and Beyonce, to Manhattan, where she hung out with him at the Trump International Hotel. Then again, they registered for seperate rooms, and when she decided to see the romantic Trevi Mountain at 4 a.m. on the Rome trip, she went with Pink. "They're just friends," says her publicist. "He's her choreographer and they've been working very closely together." Says Camilla A Shuford, a dancer and friend: "Columbus
rocks. Anyone who would choose [to work with] him if you saw him dance."
You'll probably get to catch some of Short's moves - and more - when Britney tours. "Before we're seeing some Britney belly," says
Billboard editor Chuck Taylor. "Now we're seeing every curve."

Hot Stuff BRITNEY'S MARRIED MAN
It looks like
Britney Spears, 21, is doing more than just fancy footwork with her dancer
Columbus Short, also 21. As Hot Stuff exclusively reported last week, pals of Spears and Short are buzzing that the two have become more than just friends (sources tell us that Short and his wife,
Brandi, who is eight months pregnant with their baby, recently split). Only days after our story broke, Spears flew Short to Rome, where she filmed a Pepsi commercial with
Beyonce Knowles, 21, and
Pink, 24. Four days later, Spears and Short landed in New York City and stayed at the Trump International Hotel. During an afternoon walk, the pair bought cigarettes and magazines (including
Us!), then spent most of the evening at the East Village lounge Rico, where they smoked flavored tobacco from a hookah pipe.
The next day, the pair didn't leave the hotel until about 12:30 P.M., when they went shopping at Jean Paul Gaultier and Chloe, followed by a brief lunch at Restaurant 92. A few hours later they returned to Rico. Although Spears' rep insist the two are nothing more than "close friends," a source intimate to Short and his wife says their circle of friends view the relationship in a much different light: "Brandi doesn't know what she's going to do. If he keeps it up, she's going to get a divorce."
When Spears and Short bought American Spirits, they expressed shock at the $8 price.

Has Britney learned too much from the master of taking it off? Indeed,
Hit's mag's Roy Trakin says it appears Spears is following "the Madonna blueprint: She's going for sexual outrage." Why? Beverly Hills psychologist Dr. Irene Kassorla says, "She's given all she can with her voice, but she still needs to be in the forefront." A source close to Spears says, "No one is telling her to do this. Her biggest fear is becoming Debbie Gibson" - in other words, a teen idol whose time has passed.
