Reading this article really made me tear up, seeing how much the two of them really loved each (and I'm sure they still do), all the words they said about each other, and how happy they were when they were together. They were the golden couple of pop and the love of each other's lives. And as these exclusive pictures show, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake shared a special closeness.
Taken at Justin's Los Angeles home months after their highly publicized end of their three-and-a-half year relationship, they reflect a strong bond based on a friendship that began in childhood.
Their ease with each other is visible in their body language - lounging on the sofa, Britney's leg thrown casually across Justin's lap as he serenades her with his guitar, or stealing a few private moments in the garden or at the piano.
"He was my first real love," said Britney, 21, as recently as last month, "and I doubt I'll ever be able to find love like that again."
Since their split was reported in March of last year, both have moved on. Having been linked to Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, and Alyssa Milano, Justin, 22, has enjoyed a relationship with Cameron Diaz since April.
Britney, who's been linked with Colin Farrell and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, admits: "I'm not really good in the guy department right now."
But she insists that she is relieved her relationship with Justin didn't develop into a lifelong commitment. "I think it got way too serious, way too young. It's very healthy not to be in that relationship now. Some people, especially where I'm from, marry really early. Now I think, 'Whoa, that would have been the biggest mistake of my life.'"
Britney's main focus in recent months has been her career, with a new album and upcoming tour. Her infamous kiss with Madonna at the recent MTV awards - with Justin impassive in the audience - ensured her name was in the headlines.
It was a different story when she and Justin say in the front row at January's American Music Awards in LA, blushing and giggling as host Sharon Osbourne joked about whether they were still an item. According to reports, they were inseperable, walking arm in arm and kissing at an aftershow party. A source said: "They were definitely together."
The previous months the former sweethearts were in New York at the same time and were spotted at top clubs such as Suite 16 and Bungalow 8.
Despite going their seperate ways, it's clear that an emotional bond remains between them - if not unfinished business. This was apparent in Justin's emotionally raw video for the single
Cry Me A River, which implied that Britney cheated on him. Until then, both had remained vague about the cause of the split, citing "pressures of work". The video, however, tells another tale as a man takes revenge on his cheating girlfriend - a Britney lookalike - by doing the same.
In response, Britney has denied she was ever unfaithful, adding she was "shocked" he referred to their relationship so openly. She said: "I'd never do something like that. I'm sure the world doesn't want to hear about my personal baggage anyway. I think it's so self-serving."
"I'll always have feelings for Justin," she continued. "He'll always have a special place in my heart. He was my first love, after all. But I've said goodbye. You can love someone so much, then there are times when too much has been said. You can always forgive but you just can't forget."
Justin has been less equivocal. "When we were together it was bliss, like something out of a damn fairy tale," he revealed earlier this year. "But right now, it's just so hard. I'm the type of person, if I'm not exactly sure about something, then I'll wait it out and see."
"I may not ever get over her. That's why I'm kind of chilling. I'm waiting to see. I do have to come to the realization that I might never."
He added, poignantly: "I still love her. I really do still love that girl."
The pair met on the Disney Channel's
Mickey Mouse Club when Britney was 11 and Justin was 12. "I think I feel in love with him then," Britney once said. "I couldn't take my eyes off the guy."
But it wasn't until early 2001 - after they'd been dating for two years - that they went public. They were already established stars - Britney had her first hit at 16 with
Baby One More Time and Justin was a member of the boy band *NSYNC. "When you're comfortable with someone you love, the silence is the best," she said at the time. "When we're together, we don't have to say anything. It's for real."
The severing of such a strong bond formed over many years was always going to be hard. Britney has admitted: "I was completely heartbroken. It was like, 'What do I do now?' It was the hardest thing I had to deal with." That year her parents also split up, her record sales dropped and her film debut in
Crossroads was shunned by fans. In August 2002,, she announced a six-month career break. "I need this to rejuvenate spiritually and just play." she explained.
She has returned with a vengeance, with a raunchy new image (although she's arlready paved the way by confessing that she wasn't a virgin and had experimented with drugs) which she flaunts on the cover of this month's
Rolling Stone magazine.
But despite her new party girl reputation she still plans to seelt down one day. "There'll come a time when I'm 28 or 30 where hopefully I'll get married and have three kids. I'll have my own little place and time for me."
Even if she doesn't get harbour any dreams of getting back with Justin, certain people close to her do. "I just know they're going to end up back together again," said Britney's personal assistant, Felicia Culotta. "They've loved each other since they were kids and they're such great friends still. They were in love from the beginning."
