Weeks before the release of her new CD, Britney bares all – again! – in New York City

FROM WHOM SHE’S dating to what she’s wearing – Britney Spears – whose last album was released in 2001 – lately has seen personal life garner more buzz than her pop career. It’s no wonder then that the singer, 21, is out to refocus the spotlight. On October 18th, she appeared on Saturday Night Live to mixed reviews, not as a host, but as the musical guest. The night before, she hit three New York City nightclubs after midnight to perform rather than party (they were taped for an MTV special). Gyrating to songs from In The Zone, her album due out November 18th, she got the crowds of 500 on their feet. Says a witness at Avalon, one of the clubs, “They went nuts just seeing her hang over a balcony railing before the show.”
Clearly, she needs to work it. Since Spears’ last CD, young singer-songwriters like Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch have surged, and her ex, Justin Timberlake, has become a solo star. Although Spears’ current commercial clout remains to be seen, her provocative club gigs – during which she stripped down to a sequined bra – show that her ability to shock is intact. As her manager, Larry Rudolph, tells Us, her new performances are “an effort to make people realize that she’s maturing.”

Spears, who was accompanied on her one-night tour by an NYPD escort and a 12-car motorcade, on the stage at Show. “This is a way of getting a lot of attention,” says Hits magazine senior editor Roy Trakin. “This is her way of upping the stakes.”

Was Britney Lipsyncing On SNL?
Although she sang the ballad “Everytime” live, Spears has been criticized for apparently lipsyncing while dancing to her hit, “Me Against The Music.” Reps at SNL won’t comment, but dance instructor Pam Chancey says it’s possible to hit both the beat and the notes. “But you’d be a lot more breathy than usual,” she says. “It would be less intense and harder to do.”
