| From 7's Today Tonight Britney's crossroads
REPORTER: Sonia Kruger
BROADCAST DATE: April 18, 2002 She's the quintessential girl next door; the 40 million record selling princess of pop with the world's best-known navel. She may have burst onto the scene as a pop Lolita but Britney Spears, now 20, is leaving her teens and that image behind. The release of her movie Crossroads is the start of a new period in Britney's life.
"It's so different from anything else. I'm used to performing on stage and having that instant gratification from the audience but when you are doing a movie it's a lot more laidback," she said.
"I loved the whole general gist - the idea of the movie - three girls figuring themselves out, finding their dreams and about friendship basically. I really love the idea of that."
It's not the movie debut you would expect from a pop starlet.
Crossroads, a coming-of-age road flick, has earned her rave reviews and has given her a chance to shed the Mouseketeer image at last and come of age herself.
"It was real issues that teenagers really go through - with the pregnancy, the date rape and Lucy, my character, wanting to please her father. I just thought it was very, very heartfelt. I loved it," she said.
In the movie, Britney plays a goody-two-shoes with dreams of becoming a pop star.
Crossroads also introduces us to Britney's little sister, who appears in the movie as a younger Britney.
"I think that Jamie Lynne - she definitely has what it takes to do it. If anything, she's going to be Miss Diva," Britney said.
"But I think it's important to be a kid, ride her go-cart, jump on trampolines and in the future, definitely do that."
Stuck in limbo between the virginal innocent and the seductive songstress, Britney's new single Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman is a case of art imitating life.
Now she also has to contend with grown-up concepts like kissing her co-stars.
"It's just a part of acting. He was a professional. He made me feel very comfortable," Britney said.
Chances are, Britney's not thinking about any boys at the moment, after her humiliating public break up with 'NSYNC's Justin Timberlake.
Now she prefers to spend her time watching Popstars, a show driven by viewers' dreams to be just like Britney.
"I think it's good for the viewers because it lets them dream," she said.
"There's a lot of kids out there that have that talent, that gift to sing or dance or whatever and I think it motivates and inspires them. Sometimes I watch it and think 'this is so cheesy' but I find myself watching it and I'm like, okay."
While Britney acknowledges shows such as Popstars attract people who want to be like her, she warns that her life is not all glamour.
"It is a lot of fun. I get cool clothes but there are times when it's just very raw and they don't see behind the stage," she said.
So now that she's had a taste of Hollywood, what's next for Britney?
"More acting. I would like to do more acting," she said.
Britney fans do not despair - there is plenty of pop left in this pint-sized diva and for the pop star wannabes out there she has these words of advice.
"I'd like to say thank you so much for all of your love and support and whatever your dream is, go for it - like me," she said. Click Here For video.
I'll have the caps from interview up later tooday.

| Sorry to invade your thread - but I've also added my experience to your thread...
So overall standing time - 9:00 to 19:30, so 10 hours. Boy my feet are sore. No toilet breaks, no food/drink breaks. Tough day - at least I don't need to go back to the gym till next week.
Any good pictures of Britney in the print press today (Syd Morn Herald, Bris Courier Mail etc) ?
