| Shar Jackson's interview 'Triumphed over Britney Spears and Kevin's deceit' | | Sister 2 Sister interview
Black people have known Shar Jackson for a while, ever since she became a regular on the sitcom "Moesha." But when her man, Kevin Federline, left her to ultimately marry Britney Spears, suddenly the mainstream media blew her up. She's more than just an actress and Kevin's ex but of course we talked about those things, too. Here's Shar in a fresh and open interview for our Sister 2 Sister family:
Jamie: Well finally, I got you! You're mine!
Shar: Yeah, yeah. [Laughter]
Jamie: You're getting ready to do a record?
Shar: Yeah.
Jamie: Let me hear you sing.
Shar: Girl, don't you hear my voice I left it in the studio.
Jamie: You were in the studio last night?
Shar: Honey, I've been in there every day.
Jamie: Are you writing?
Shar: Yeah.
Jamie: Shar, did you sing before?
Shar: I did. I was in a group called Mpulz. We released a song on the Princess Diaries soundtrack.
Jamie: Wait a minute. What is this?
Shar: M-P-U-L-Z. You know you gotta be funky with the spelling.
Jamie: That's why our kids can't read now.
Shar: Exactly, yes, yes. I must admit I contribute to that.
Jamie: Where are you from, Shar?
Shar: L.A.
Jamie: Okay. How'd you get with the "Moesha" show? Was that your first gig?
Shar: Oh girl, no. I?ve been working since I was three.
Jamie: What? What were you in before?
Shar: I was under the radar. I was trying to have a career, not a moment. You know? [Laughter]
Jamie: So tell me some of the things you did.
Shar: Started in commercials, of course, and I think I was on every urban television show at least once. I've guest starred on "Hanging with Mr. Cooper," "Roc," "Me and the Boys,"...I mean everything..."Steve Harvey."
Jamie: How'd you get on "Moesha?"
Shar: I think it was from when I did this show called "South Central."
Jamie: I remember "South Central."
Shar: I did "South Central," and Ralph Farquhar, the exec of "Moesha," did that show as well. They were filming the pilot of "Moesha" and the person they had hired, I guess it just wasn't working out. So they called me last minute and was like, "Look, Shar, we?re filming this thing tomorrow. Do you want to come down and be a part of it?" I was honored, so I was like okay, yeah, let me come on and guest star. I went over, did the guest star spot, network loved the show, we got picked up, and they invited me back. So I reoccurred in about 13 of the first 15 of our first season, then the second year they made me a series regular.
Jamie: How long were you with it?
Shar: We did six years.
Jamie: What was it like with Brandy and Countess Vaughn?
Shar: Those are my girls.
Jamie: What's Countess doing now?
Shar: Countess is enjoying motherhood. I think we all are. You know, we're grown now.
Jamie: You ain't grown! You're still a baby. How old are you now? 27?
Shar: Just turned 29 in August.
Jamie: All right.
Shar: But make sure you clear that up, girl, because people are calling me 30 in the magazines. Tell them to stop. Not yet. Give me my year!
Jamie: [Laughs] Okay. How many kids are there? There're three?
Shar: I have four.
Jamie: Yeah, you had a kid by a person before Kevin, right?
Shar: Yeah, I have two from my high school boyfriend.
Jamie: Is he around?
Shar: Yeah, we're really good friends. He sees his kids all the time. I mean, our relationship's great.
Jamie: Well how old are those children?
Shar: Eleven and 12.
Jamie: And then the other ones, those are Kevin's? Now how old are they?
Shar: Three and 1.
Jamie: And you still got your body?
Shar: Honey, yes. I put on a little weight for a second, like after I had the baby; because I was trying to get this role in this movie and they told me they wanted me to gain 30 pounds.
Jamie: They wanted you to gain 30 pounds?
Shar: Yes, and this was the role of a lifetime, whatever. So I was like, "I'm willing to do that. I will sacrifice."
Jamie: So what happened? Did you do it?
Shar: I went ahead. I met with the producers after I put on the 30 pounds and they go, "Ooh. Sorry, you're still not big enough. Can you put on another 30?" And that's when I said, you know what? I can't do that because I already walk past the mirror and I don't know her.
Jamie: When did that happen?
Shar: This was a couple of months after I had the baby. Then it took me about a good three, four months to put it on.
Jamie: That's amazing. So you've lost that weight now?
Shar: Well, I'm slowly moving. I could lose it fast if I wanted to, but you know, certain men see me and go, "Ooh, Shar, we like you thick like that."
Jamie: Shar, you can't be looking at nobody else, now.
Shar: No, trust me, girl, I'm still not ready. But I'm accepting the compliments [laughter].
Jamie: Do you think it'd be easy for you to get a boyfriend now with four kids?
Shar: I thought about that, but you know what? If he?s the right man, he won?t care.
Jamie: He won't care. Well, what about Quentin Tarantino?
Shar: Lord Jesus, that is my boy! Dude, I love him. That is my hangout buddy, that is my let?s-go-to-the-movies-and-see-scary-movies-together...that's my partner in crime.
Jamie: How did you meet?
Shar: We met at a party in the Hollywood Hills. A mutual friend of ours threw a party and another friend introduced us. Quentin has always been my favorite director?him and Wes Craven. I?m a horror fanatic. So when I saw him I had met him previously because I auditioned for Jackie Brown. But that was when I was younger. So anyway, I went over, the friend introduced us, and we just started talking. We had a lot of stuff in common. He doesn?t meet too many women who are into horror films and nowadays I don?t meet too many men who are into horror films and stuff like that. So whenever a new horror film comes out, Quentin and I get together and we go check it out.
Jamie: You don?t let the kids see horror films, do you?
Shar: Oh, my kids love them!
Jamie: Girl???
Shar: I grew up on them. And I?m not that crazy, so I don?t think it will affect them that much.
Jamie: How did you meet Kevin Federline?
Shar: One of the producers on "Moesha" was friends with a lot of dancers, and he invited him to a bunch of our parties. So I met him at one of the "Moesha" wrap parties. We just kept in touch over the next year, year and a half, and then we kind of fell out of touch. Then maybe six months after that we saw each other again up at the dance studio, Millennium. I was up there rehearsing with my group and he was in dance class. We decided to go over to the dance class to check it out and my girl was like, "Dude, isn?t that Kevin?" I was like, "Ooh, that is. And look at him dance! Yeah, holler at your girl!" [Laughter] We spoke to him and after that we were inseparable.
Jamie: So did you go with White boys before?
Shar: I mean, I'm an equal opportunity dater. My momma raised me not to discriminate.
Jamie: [Laughs] Had he been with Black girls before?
Shar: No, I believe I was his first.
Jamie: So what did you like about him? Was he sexy?
Shar: He was sexy as I don't know what. I just think it was his flavor. You know, the way he danced, everything about him was just sexy to me. Plus when I met him, he had cornrows, so he wasn?t like your typical?you know. He had flavor.
Jamie: So you all were tight ever since then?
Shar: Yeah.
Jamie: Did you want to get pregnant by him?
Shar: Well I mean, you know, we talked about it. He had already joined my family pretty much because he came and accepted the two that I already had. And we just really fell in love. We talked about marriage all the time. I just wasn?t quite ready to make that plunge because I figured I only want to do it one time and when I do, it has to be the most immaculate thing ever. So it was like, let's just build up to it. After the 9/11 thing, we both kind of just looked at each other and was like, this is what's important in life. Everything else is fine and dandy, but my number one focus in life is my family. And he was already a part of it. He loves the two kids that I already had. He had already claimed them as his. And it was like, you know what? Let?s have our own.
Jamie: Well what happened then?
Shar: He got caught up. I?m feeling it, caught up. [Laughter] But you know, he just got distracted by other things.
Jamie: But Shar, your attitude is so good. It?s so nourishing. But I know this had to be very painful.
Shar: Oh, it was extremely painful, but you can?t dwell on that because it will eat you up.
Jamie: Are you all still friends? You still love him?
Shar: Very much so. That' my boy, I'm gonna love Kevin forever.
Jamie: I think he?s gonna love you too.
Shar: He doesn?t have a choice. I got in there. You can?t just get rid of that.
Jamie: What kind of father is he?
Shar: He?s a good dad when he?s around. He's just...his schedule is insane.
Jamie: Girl, it was like I had broken up with him. Whatever happened?
Shar: Everything happens for a reason, and obviously God felt that was something I needed to go through at that time to make me the person that I am today. So I accept it. I ask him why continuously, but I accept it.
Jamie: You think it?s just the money?
Shar: I mean, it wasn?t like I was broke, but she does have quite a bit more than I do. [Laughter] You know we were comfortable, but she?s on a whole 'nother level.
Jamie: Well how is it with Britney? Do the kids go and stay at Britney?s house with Kevin and stuff like that?
Shar: Well they haven?t been over there in a while, but you know, my main thing is to make sure that Kevin stays a part of his kids? life.
Jamie: What did the kids say? How did you deal with that?
Shar: The hardest part was dealing with the older two, really, because they couldn?t quite understand.
Jamie: They didn?t understand that?
Shar: And then they had to hear it at school, and it?s like, "Dude, I can?t believe your stepdad left your mom for Britney Spears." That stuff is what I really could have done without. You don?t mess with my kids, dude. If you want to throw punches at me or say stupid things about me and talk about me all bad, I?m a big girl; I can brush it off and keep moving. But don?t mess with my babies because you might see another side of me.
Jamie: That?s the hardest thing, dealing with them. What?s the craziest experience you?ve had with paparazzi? Have you had a lot of that?
Shar: Oh my god, yeah! It?s bananas. But let me tell you something that happened because of how tough the paparazzi are on us. I was in the grocery store one day with Kori. She?s in the basket, and she?s facing the women behind me. They can?t see me because my back is to them or whatever.
Jamie: How old is Kori?
Shar: She?s 3. She was 2 at the time. So we?re in the grocery store and these two older women are behind us. And all I hear is, "Oh my god, that?s Kori."
Jamie: What?
Shar: And I turned around, like, are you for real?
Jamie: They knew your daughter?
Shar: Honey, I was appalled. Paparazzi and other people decide that they want to take pictures and put them on the cover of magazines and things of that nature.
