Kelly Clarkson beat out singers including Mariah Carey, Sheryl Crow and Paul McCartney to become the first contestant from "American Idol" to win a Grammy on Wednesday but she failed to thank the wildly popular reality TV show that made her famous.

Clarkson thanked Jesus, God, the radio, her fans and her mother when she picked up Grammys for Best Pop Vocal Album and for Best Female Pop Vocal performance, but in two speeches she omitted any mention of "American Idol," which aired on Fox against the 48th annual Grammy Awards (CBS) for part of the night.

An overwhelmed Clarkson, who could not hold back tears during her first acceptance speech, could not believe her good fortune in winning the second.

"I don't know what is going on but thank you Jesus and God and everyone else who supported my career," she said in what might have been an extremely oblique reference to "American Idol."

Clarkson picked up the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal performance for her hit, "Since U Been Gone," and also performed her single "Because of You" on the telecast.

Some television analysts have speculated that one of the more intriguing competitions of the evening will be the ratings contest between the two shows for the hour in which they both aired at the same time.

A CBS spokesman said "She's absolutely free to say whatever she wants up there," when asked if the singer had been asked to avoid referring to the competing program.

A few weeks ago, "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell slammed Clarkson for refusing to let the TV talent contest that launched her career use her hits, while a spokesman for the pop star denied there was ever a dispute over song rights.

He said Clarkson, by far the biggest "Idol" success story, was happy to hear her song, "Since U Been Gone," on "American Idol" the previous night. A contestant on the premiere of the show's fifth season warbled Clarkson's massive hit in the first few minutes of the program.

Cowell, speaking to a gathering of TV critics earlier that day, said Clarkson would be making a "big mistake" if she barred "Idol" from using her songs after the show catapulted her to stardom. "No matter how talented Kelly Clarkson is, she would not be in the position she's in now without winning this show," he said.

I kneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew that she was going to get crap for not mentioning AI when she won... but who the hell cares?

She thanked her fans, her label, and many other people, WHY does she need to say "I'd also like to thank American Idol," when it's the fans that got her where she was today? I know she wouldn't be where she is right now without the show but it wasn't the show alone that got her there, it was the fans and that's what's important.

It also pisses me off that on the AOL poll, right now 60+% of the voters said she was wrong for not mentioning Idol.

She doesn't have to mention it every time she wins an award, for real. I'm glad she didn't say anything. They didn't help her with this album, so screw them. She thanked the fans. That's enough.

Nope Errick. She was only nominated for two and she won them. ! So happy for her.

And no, she doesn't need to thank them everywhere she goes. When she takes a crap does she have to say, "Thank you AI for allowing me to have a bowel movement." Kelly was going to make it regardless of AI. I think people forget that.

Uhm Hello, she won a freaking Grammy! Did you see her crying? Did you see how suprised she looked? Did you see how much she was freaking out?! People forget things in times like that. Whatever. They would have picked on her either way.

PS. I thought it was soo sweet how she stopped and said something to Gwen after winning her second of the night. Pregnant Gwen is LOVE!! <<33

I had a feeling to that she was gonna get crapped on for this as well. I could see it coming, like you all said she thanked her family and fans {which in my opinion in more important they anyone else.} AND her record label is important as well. GO Kelly!! <33333333333 I love you no matter what!

See I thought maybe she just didn't think to thank them too... but something tells me there's a reason she didn't thank them? Hell if she did I would have been one of the many people who thought she was just doing it to keep them happy anyway

Yes, she should have thanked them. And Christina should've thanked Mickey Mouse Club when she won her first Grammy. And Britney should've thanked the casting director of Ruthless the first time she won an award.

Exactly. Listening to the first album, I don't think they wanted to push her in the direction of rock, but the soul way. Rock fits her so much better and that's why the album sells like crazy and she is so much more populair around the world.

I don't think she should've mention AI. This is how she started, and just because people saw her grow from 'just a girl' to a 'superstar', doesn't mean she has to keep thanking the show she was on. Other artist don't thank every person who helped them with their career either.
