A driver is being questioned by police after a rush-hour train crash collided into a parked car killing at least nine people.
Emergency teams said as many as 200 people had been injured by the collision in Glendale, Los Angeles, around 40 of them critically. A motorist is being questioned by police following the crash, with police saying it appeared as though the car had been deliberately parked on the tracks.
A double-decker commuter train heading out of LA's Union station hit the Jeep Cherokee before ploughing into a stationary freight train.That collision caused a second commuter train heading out of LA to derail and crash back into the first locomotive.
Los Angeles sheriff Lee Baca said: "The cause is someone on the rail in a private vehicle."You don't put your car on the track and put yourself in harm's way and all these passengers in harm's way.
Fire teams are continuing to search through the carriages, in case some passengers are still trapped. Victims are being treated either at hospitals or an emergency medical area set up at a nearby superstore.
One passenger said: "It was surreal. A thump and a bang. All of a sudden the train stopped. Everyone was flying." Another said: "I remember flipping over and landing in the aisle. I just remember darkness."
Witnesses said one of the commuter trains was almost full. Nearly 300 firefighters were at the scene and 35 ambulances were taking the injured to hospitals.
