| Passenger jet in flames at Toronto airport
CTV.ca News Staff
A passenger jet burst into flames after apparently skidding off the runway at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
Few details are known, and there is no word on whether there are any casualties.
Police indicate the aircraft was an Air France jet that was trying to land when it ran into trouble.
"An Air France plane landing on runway 2-4 left went off the end of the runway the area of Convert Drive and the 401 area in Mississauga," said Sgt. Glyn Griffiths.
He couldn't say whether there were any injuries or if any passengers had been removed from the plane, but said there's been a full response by all emergency vehicles.
Live television pictures show flames and smoke billowing from the aircraft in a tree-filled area near the airport.
CTV Toronto's Jim Junkin reports that 200 people are thought to have been on board.
Severe thunderstorms were hitting the area at the time of the accident. Witness Mark Yppelar told CTV Newsnet that he saw heavy lightning strikes in the area before he saw the aircraft on fire.
The Greater Toronto Airport Authority is expected to hold a press conference at 5 p.m. ET.

| Capacity is 252, but it may have only been 200 people on the plane. So that's not great news, but it's a bit of a relief.
The pictures on the TV are just scary.
The flight was Air France Flight 358 from Paris to Toronto, so says an Air France Ticket agent.

| 200 people are still a lot! it was breaking news on the BBC so I thought it was big news still think it is actually, but anyway.. seeing it all in fire seems to be a nightmare for the people inside. It's indeed scary to look at. |

| Oh yeah, it's no doubt it's big news. 200 people IS a lot, but it's better than 252 is what I'm saying. Like I said, it's not great news, but it's a relief that there could be fewer people in danger than there potentially could be. |

| It sounds as though the plane was struck by lightning after landing.
The police of the area have said that the pilot and an unknown number of passengers have been taken to hospital. Some of the survivors were found walking along the 401 highway, which is one of the busiest highways in Canada.
==
It's also not the first time a plane has crashed into that revine. A plane crashed in that same revine in 1978.

| UPDATE: Ed Moody, and eye witness, told CTV that a bunch of the survivors took refuge under a bridge under the 401, and he spoke to a stewardess who said she's fairly sure that all passengers managed to get off the plane. Again, she's not 100% sure, but she thinks so. The stewardess was also under a lot of shock and was unable to determine whether the plane was taking off or landing.
EDIT: 291 crew and passengers were on the plane. The copilot was taken to the hospital, 4 were taken to one hospital
EDIT 2: It appears all passengers have survived crash. Only 14 injuries. EDIT 3: 297 PASSENGERS AND CREW. ALL ARE SAFE, NO FATALITIES.
