Thumbs up Naomi Campbell with a mop

Naomi Campbell has been sentenced to mop the floors of New York's Sanitation Department.

The supermodel, who received the punishment after being found guilty of throwing a phone at her maid, will complete five days of court-ordered community service at the Manhattan garage for trash-trucks.

Naomi - who has been advised to wear an orange vest and workman's boots - is due to begin her sentence on March 19.

During the court case, lawyers for the British model told the judge that she would not agree to "do a Boy George".

The ex-Culture Club singer was ordered to sweep the streets of New York wearing a bright orange jacket, after being found guilty of lying to police about a burglary.

Naomi will be allowed to stay inside the garage out of the public view.

Naomi, 36, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour assault in January, after being arrested for hurling her crystal-encrusted phone at Ana Scolavino last March. The incident left Ana needing four stitches to the head.

Default Naomi Campbell begins community service

The closest British supermodel Naomi Campbell came to fashion accessories on Monday was a toilet brush and a pair of rubber gloves, as she swapped her stiletto heels for a pair of combat boots at the beginning of a week of community service in New York.

Hiding under a black hat and dark glasses, Campbell ignored a crowd of reporters and television crews as she arrived in a black sport-utility vehicle at the grimy Sanitation Department facility where she is serving her sentence.

The only outfit the runway queen would be modelling during a week of scrubbing -- ordered by a New York court for throwing a cell phone at her maid last year -- was a yellow and orange Sanitation Department vest and face mask.

"She will be sweeping, cleaning, mopping. We have windows that need to be cleaned. We have plenty of work for her to do," said Sanitation Department Deputy Chief Albert Durrell. "If they are dirty, she will be cleaning toilets."

Campbell would be working in the garage, offices, locker rooms and bathrooms at the facility, which lies under an elevated stretch of highway in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge, Durrell said.

"She hasn't got to the toilets yet, she's still just doing the floors," added Deputy Commissioner Vito Furso.

Campbell was performing her duties inside the facility and well away from the glare of television crews and paparazzi, as ordered by the court.
