Photographs have been released allegedly showing British soldiers mistreating Iraqi civilian prisoners. They include images of bound detainees facing simulated punches and kicks from soldiers, an Iraqi tied to a fork-lift truck, and naked detainees simulating sexual acts.
The head of the Army, General Sir Mike Jackson, said after the release of the pictures that he condemned utterly all acts of abuse. Twenty-two pictures were made public by a court in Osnabruck, Germany, after the start of the courts martial of three British soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
The servicemen deny the charges. One admits assault.
Some of the acts were allegedly photographed at a humanitarian aid camp near Basra in May 2003. The photographs taken from the cameras of five servicemen.
Evidence of the alleged abuse came to light after one set of pictures was left for processing at a shop in Tamworth, Staffordshire. When the developer saw the photographs she was "disturbed by the the content" and called the police
