Swany: typically as far as I understand it, the priest was use because the people felt that he was the one who had the authority to do so. I could be wrong, maybe political or high standing people in the society such as the leader or king/president did this in other cultures.

No, I just don't care to loop around in the same discussion with bigots such as you. I've been to Disney and it really is a great place. certainly a reccomended vacation spot and a favorite for family. question: would you say the same thing about the Quran or any other foundational religious book, or are you saying it because you appear to be a little upset and it happens to be the one associated with mine?

Emma, I'm not sure why you would think it's offensive for someone who isn't religious to call the bible a sham. But, I mean, there is a point behind that. There is hardly a word or phrase in the bible that doesn't contradict itself. And if it doesn't contradict itself, then there is a logical scientific explanation for it, in most of the cases in the bible.

However, that's just going off of what I've heard from the bible.

To me, the bible is nothing more than a self-help book, written to try and keep order within the human race. It is a book that people turn to when they have low self-esteem and self-worth. And that's the same with religion. When something bad happens, they automatically turn to "God has a reason for doing it" to make themselves feel better. Meanwhile, the rest of us realize that shit happens and we learn ourselves how to move on.

But, like I said, it's nothing more than a peice of literature you'd find at your local Chapters in the Self-Help section. Much like other titles you'd find there, including "Feeling Good: The New Therapy" and "No, You Don't Look Fat" (lol) The only difference is, the Bible uses what can only be proven as fiction instead of actual proven facts.

Woah... that seemed a bit off topic. But anyways, that's just to demonstrate an opposing view on the bible.

Well to me the Bible is what I base my life on, how I live my life, what God and Jesus teach us. I try to live my life by the 10 Commandments, I would never call the Qur'an worthless and a sham or anything because I respect it and people who believe in it.

The Bible to me is very precious and I read a lot from it.

The bible does help me. When something bad happens, I don't blame it on God. I blame it on the devil. God wants so badly for good things to happen to people, that why would anyone think for even one second that he made 9/11 happen or Hurricane Katrina happen just to teach us a lesson or whatever. I'm a christian, I read the bible, I believe what it says. I follow the bible and I study the word everyday of my life.

Now, with that said, I do not hate gay people. If you're a guy and attracted to other guys, I have no right to say you're going to hell for that. You cannot help who you like. I have gay friends, I have gay people in my family. I'm not one to judge on that. I know what the bible says about it, but I also know that God doesn't hate gay people. He doesn't. And I don't hate them, either. I just don't.

And yes, the above paragraphs are what I believe, so if you're going to try to debate with me, please don't. It's not worth it.

I used to respect the bible and anyone who believed in it. But, following the golden rule, I don't feel I'm respected by the majority of those who read the bible, and therefore, I don't feel I should respect it any longer.

I have to agree with you on this. I also think its nothing more then a fictional story. Just because baby's get born and their parents tell them this book is the truth, doesnt mean it is. It is close minded and you have to believe it or 'will burn in hell'. whatever that may be... It just all sounds so fake and unbelieveble to me that i do not believe a word of religion.

Thank you Swany for bringing in a level headed opposite point of view and *hopefully* bringing us back to reasonable discussion rather than taunting and ravaging.

I think the golden rule is derrived from the commandments/Bible is it not? It's taught to "love thy neighbor as thyself" which sounds similiar. Do you happen to know where it came from? Just curious.

I don't understand how the Bible as a whole can be thrown to the side and considered "worthless" and "fiction" when there are good/valuable lessons in it. Furthermore religion isn't something I only turn to when I am depressed or down. As a matter of fact I don't turn to it or God enough when I am going through those times. But it isn't just then but in times of joy and acheivement that many turn to God for thanks or the Bible.
