It was a lost hunter in the mountains of Julian (45 miles northeast of San Diego) who set off a signal fire. I initially thought it was the ELF, the Earth Liberation Front, this ecoterrorist organization that opposes industrial growth and development. They burn construction sites and car dealerships and such... their slogan is "If you build it, we will burn it" or "Stop raping nature" or something.

And 14 deaths my ass, the numbers you hear are so damn conservative since they don't want to spark public panic. My guess is that it's in the hundreds at least, maybe between 100 and 200.
