India's tsunami warning system to be in place within 2-3 years

BANGALORE, India (AFP) - A tsunami warning system that India has decided to install will be in place in the next two to three years and will cost the government 27 million dollars, a minister said.

"The system would be able to provide information beforehand on the speed of the tsunami when it hits the coast and the regions that would be harmed the most, among others," Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters here on Wednesday.

Rescued Tsunami Victim Thanks Allah

By VIJAY JOSHI, Associated Press Writer

KLANG, Malaysia - Lying prone on the bobbing wooden plank, Ari Afrizal looked left and saw the fiery red sun dipping into the watery horizon. Weakly, he turned his face the other way and saw a pearly white full moon rising in the east.

All around him, the sea looked like it was sprinkled with chopped leaves of gold, shimmering in the sun's glow. Ari had never seen a more wondrous sight.

It was dusk on Dec. 26, and Ari was adrift in the Indian Ocean.

"I was not prepared to die," the 21-year-old carpenter said.

And against all odds, he didn't.

....

John Kennedy, the New Zealander who captains the Al Yamamah, did not expect to find anyone alive on the raft. After all, it had been more than two weeks since the tsunami.

Fears Ease Over Disease Risk in Tsunami Zone-U.N.

GENEVA (Reuters) - Fears that the Indian Ocean tsunami could unleash epidemics which would double the death toll are fading as access to clean water improves, the World Health Organization (news - web sites) (WHO) said on Thursday.

.....

But the biggest global relief effort seen in peacetime is reducing the health threat, particularly from water-borne disease, although there is a need for continued vigilance, WHO spokesman Iain Simpson told Reuters.

Malaria Threat Emerges in Tsunami Zone

By EMMA ROSS and JIM GOMEZ, Associated Press Writers

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia - Health officials plan to go door to door and tent to tent with mosquito-killing spray guns beginning Friday to head off a looming threat that one expert says could kill 100,000 more people around the tsunami disaster zone: malaria.

The devastation and heavy rains are creating conditions for the largest area of mosquito breeding sites Indonesia has ever seen, said the head of the aid group anchoring the anti-malaria campaign on Sumatra island. The pools of salt water created by the Dec. 26 tsunami have been diluted by seasonal rains into a brackish water that mosquitos love.

While the threat of cholera and dysentery outbreaks is diminishing by the day because clean water is increasingly getting to tsunami survivors, the danger of malaria and dengue fever epidemics is increasing, said Richard Allan, director of the Mentor Initiative, a public health group that fights malaria epidemics.
