Default Why is it that...?

The other day my mom asked me why it was that a show like Nip/Tuck on FX was able to use profanity and sex to readily in their shows when other channels such as NBC or CBS, etc, couldn't?

My thinking was that it was because everyone gets NBC and the like with their standard cable packages, but for channels like FX you usually need to pay a higher price and get an extended package and because of that different rules were enforced on them? If that makes sense. I don't know if I'm right or not, I was just totally guessing. But does anyone know why this is?

Thats exactly it. You can't put things like that on the major public networks, but since you don't get the extra channels without paying for them, its allowed. Thats why South Park gets away with so much language. You can get away with even MORE on channels like HBO, Showtime, etc. On those you can show pretty much everything but penetration/penis. I think the reasoning behind that is you have to pay even MORE to get those channels. Thats why Sex and The City was cut down when it went on TBS.

Nip/Tuck is one of my favorite shows by the way. I'm saving for the first season box set. Julian.....

The FCC regulates the content on the public airwaves and that is why cable shows can get away with more. However, the FCC has expressed an interest in regulating cable. But, it will be satellite that will be the most likely to come under FCC regulation before or if cable is regulated.

The FCC's policies are so inconsistent. First, profanity was ok, now it's not. It's a mess.
