Big Grin Upcomming Kick-Ass Movies

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Release Date: December 18th, 2002 (that's a Wednesday)

MPAA Rating: PG-13 (There's a contractual obligation not to deliver this film at an R rating; the rating is not official until the MPAA announces it , but expect PG-13).

Distributor: New Line Cinema

Cast: Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee), Sala Baker (Sauron), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Billy Boyd (Pippin), Martin Csokas (Celeborn), Brad Dourif (Grima Wormtongue), Bernard Hill (Theoden), Christopher Lee (Saruman), Dominic Monaghan (Merry), Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Miranda Otto (Eowyn), John Rhys-Davies (Gimli), Andy Serkis (the voice of Gollum), Joel Tobeck (young Gollum), Liv Tyler (Arwen), Karl Urban (Eomer), Hugo Weaving Elrond), David Wenham (Faramir)

Director: Peter Jackson (Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners, Dead/Alive, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Return of the King)

Screenwriter: Peter Jackson, Frances Walsh (the writing team behind The Frighteners and Heavenly Creatures), Philippa Boyens (debut), Stephen Sinclair (cowriter of Meet the Feebles and Braindead)

Based Upon: The second novel of the classic trilogy of books by J.R.R. Tolkien that nearly singlehandedly established the modern genre of fantasy fiction as we know it. This middle chapter is preceded by The Fellowship of the Ring and followed by The Return of the King.

Filming Note: All three films of this trilogy will be filmed at the same time, over the course of roughly one year in New Zealand. Filming began on October 11th, 1999. (7/7/00) Principal filming is scheduled to wrap on the three films in February, 2001. There will still be plenty of postproduction required (especially on the second and third films). (1/3/01) According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming has already wrapped.

Budget: It was recently (7/12/99) announced that New Line Cinema has expanded the budget for Lord of the Rings to a total of $190 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive film projects ever. However, this is offset by the fact that this money will produce three films, making the average for each film for $63 million, which is not really that much for films of this scale.

Genre: Action, Eye Candy

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life
Release Date: June, 2003

Release Date Notes: (7/15/02) It's not surprising that Paramount is going with the same month of release as the first movie, which was released on June 15th, 2001. There have been online rumors that the target date is June 20th, but both that date (The Hulk) and June 27th (Charlie's Angels 2: Halo) already have movies that seem like films Paramount would not want to open directly against. So, my hunch right now is that they may go with June 13th, which is just two days off from the two-year anniversary.

Title Note: (7/15/02) The title, "Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life" may be a working title, and the way I have up above, followed by "Tomb Raider 2", is definitely just a way of letting the user know that this is the sequel. The final title could be a combination of the two, or just one or the other. (8/16/02) Sure enough. Paramount is basically keeping the original title, and just inserting "The Cradle of Life" at the end as an additional subtitle.

MPAA Rating Note: (7/15/02) Nothing's official until the MPAA sees the final cut, but it's extremely likely that Paramount is going for a PG-13 again this time. Any rumors you've heard about Ms. Jolie frolicking for half the movie in the nude are most likely exactly that: rumors.

Distributor: Paramount Pictures

Production Company: Mutual Film Company (Virus, Hard Rain, Black Dog), Lawrence Gordon Productions (Mystery Men, Boogie Nights, K-PAX) (both coproduced Lara Croft: Tomb Raider)

Cast: Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft), Chris Barrie (Hillary), Gerard Butler (Terry Sheridan), Djimon Hounsou, Noah Taylor (Bryce); other cast not announced yet.

Cast Notes: (7/15/02) Jon Voight told columnist Cindy Pearlman of the Chicago Sun-Times back in December, 2001 that he asked Jolie (his daughter) if there could be room in this sequel for him to reprise his role as her father, Lord Croft, from the first film. A recent script review, however, says that this sequel does not deal with the father-daughter relationship like the first film did (though that review didn't directly say that Lord Croft wasn't in the movie at all, either).

Director: Jan de Bont (Twister, Speed, Speed 2: Cruise Control, The Haunting; he's got many other projects in development, including The 28th Amendment)

Screenwriter: Dean Geogaris (feature film debut; he's got several high-profile projects in development, including the "Manchurian Candidate" remake and a movie version of the "Tristan and Isolde" legend that Ridley Scott is producing)

Based Upon: This is the sequel to the hit film, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which opened to over $48 million on June 15th, 2001, setting the record for the highest opening for a movie starring a woman, which was itself based upon the popular "Tomb Raider" videogame series. The latest entry, "Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness" will be available, exclusively on the Sony Playstation 2, in the fall of 2002.

Premise: This time around, archaeologist and explorer extraordinaire journeys to a temple, sunken underwater, that leads to a sphere that contains the mythical Pandora's Box, only to have it stolen from her by Chen Lo, the leader of a Chinese crime syndicate, who's in league with a bad guy named Reiss who wants to use the Box as a doomsday weapon... (at least, that's what the script review over at Corona says the movie is about; Paramount hasn't said anything officially, as of 7/12/02, but the elements laid out here, that there is a major underwater sequence, that Chen Lo is the name of the villain, etc., have been mentioned elsewhere online) (Butler plays Jolie's ex-boyfriend; Djimon Hounsou plays a Masai warrior who escorts Angelina when she goes to Africa)

Filming: Production is scheduled to start in early September, 2002 at Pinewood Studios in England, with location shooting expected to also be done in Africa and China.

Genre: Action, Eye Candy, Female, Science Fiction, Sequel

The Fast and the Furious 2 (2003)
Release Date: Summer, 2003

Distributor: Universal Pictures

Video Note: (7/14/01) It's worth noting that of the three sequels that Original Films has made for their movies, two (Cruel Intentions 2 and The Skulls 2) have gone direct-to-video. This film, however, is most certainly being planned on as a (big) theatrical release.

Production Company: Original Film (Urban Legends: Final Cut, Cruel Intentions, The Skulls)

Cast: Paul Walker (Brian O'Conner), Tyrese, Eva Mendes; no other returning cast have officially signed on yet.

Director: John Singleton (2000's "Shaft", "Rosewood", "Boyz N the Hood", "Baby Boy", "Higher Learning")

Cast Notes:

7/14/01 - The first film didn't have a particularly high "death count", so the list of possible returning actors is long (see IMDb listing). Universal will definitely try to get the four stars (Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez) to return. Even if some or all of them don't sign on, what sometimes happens with sequels is the focus shifts to supporting characters, of which there are several to choose from (like Ja Rule as Edwin, Rick Yune as Johnny Tran, or Noel Gugliemi as Hector, for example). Of course, there's always the Speed 2/Hannibal option of just casting another actor in a role. I'm mentioning all this because if salary demands are too high, Universal may counter that the true selling factor of the first film wasn't the stars, but the cars. Having said that, I do personally think Diesel sold a lot of tickets. (11/21/01) The Los Angeles Times reports that Universal has two scripts in development, with the second leaving out Diesel's character, if he doesn't sign. (4/29/02) That's the script Universal is going to go with.

Director Notes: (2/28/02) The director of the first film, Rob Cohen, specified that he would only return if Vin did, so he's off the project altogether. He and Diesel reunited on XXX instead. (5/17/02) Shaft director John Singleton is the current front-runner for the job. (5/25/02) Singleton appears to be signed.

Screenwriter: Michael Brandt (and Derek Haas (cowriters of the TBS telefilm, Invincible) Gary Scott Thompson (1992's Split Second, K-911; cowriter of The Fast and the Furious)

Based Upon: This will be the sequel to the 2001 surprise hit movie, The Fast & the Furious, which as of 7/14/01, has brought in over $110 million in the USA, and is likely to end up with around $150 million, for a global total of probably double that... on a budget of under $40 million.

Script Note:

4/29/02 - Universal had hired Gary Scott Thompson (K-911; cowriter of the The Fast and the Furious) to work on a draft that included Vin Diesel's character, but they decided to go with one that focused on Paul Walker instead.

Title Note: There's no word yet (7/14/01) what the title of this title might be. Keep in mind that the first film went through several titles (Racer X, Redline, and Street Wars) before TF&TF. Here's hoping they go with something like The Faster and the More Furious (or even better, The Fastest..., etc.).

Premise: (7/14/01) No details have been announced yet about this film, but if you saw the ending of the first film, you probably have your own questions about "what happens next", and presumably, this sequel would address them (which would require the return of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker's characters, at least). The first film dealt with a gang of street racers who highjacked semi's to fund their need for speed, so they're the most likely focus for this sequel as well (depending, as I say above, upon the cast). (12/30/01) From The Hollywood Reporter comes news that both versions of the script are set in Miami, and include helicopter and boat chase scenes. (4/29/02) Here's the plot: Brian O'Conner (Walker), stripped of his badge after the events of the first film, gets a chance to redeem himself by going undercover to infiltrate the world of Miami street racing. (7/25/02) More specifically, Tyrese also plays an undercover agent who works in tangent with Walker's character, and then they also team up with a female undercover agent, to bring down a powerful drug trafficker. (8/9/02) Mendes plays that female agent.

Genre: Action, Crime, Eye Candy, Sequel

Filming: (7/14/01) There is no production start date for this project. Vin Diesel, for example, has a full plate, with plenty to work on until at least mid-2002, so I would guess that's the earliest filming could start (presuming the script and cast are ready). (12/31/01) Variety reports that filming will probably start sometime in 2002 or 2003. (2/7/02) Ja Rule confirmed via MTV that production will be taking place in Miami, Florida. (2/28/02) Word that Rob Cohen is doing another film after XXX first suggests 2003 is more likely. (4/29/02) With Cohen and Diesel dropping out, Universal is racing to get this in theaters, with production now scheduled to start in October, 2002. (5/25/02) According to JohnSingletonFilms.com, production is now scheduled to start on September 9th, 2002 in Miami.

Batman: Year One (2003)
Release Date: Unknown; it will depend upon when production starts.

Distributor: Warner Bros.

Cast: None yet announced.

Rumored Cast: (1/7/00) There have been many rumors about young actors (Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, etc.) in the past few years, but they've all turned out to be speculation at best. (4/4/01) Added to the list are Aaron Eckhart (James Gordon, according to Anderson Jones of E! Online) and Brendan Fehr (Corona, 4/4/01).

Director: Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) (in talks; pending approval of the script he's writing with Miller)

Screenwriter: Frank Miller (cowriter of Robocop 2, Robocop 3; is also working on Hard Boiled), Darren Aronofsky (Pi, The Last Man; cowriter of Below, Requiem for a Dream)

Based Upon: This movie will be based upon the story, written by Frank Miller, that originally appeared in Batman #404-407, and has since been reprinted as the Batman: Year One trade paperback.

Sequel Note: It's probably a bit premature to be talking about a #2 for a film that hasn't even started production yet, but well, here goes. If this does become the kickoff of a new series, I'd recommend WB consider doing The Long Halloween which takes place over the course of Year Two (basically) of Batman's current timeline. It combines a Godfather-like mobster epic with a Two-Face origin story. There was indeed a Year Two (and a Year Three story that introduced Robin) in the comics, but LH is a favorite. The real reason, however, that I think Long Halloween would be a great sequel to this film is that it finishes the storyline of the Falconi family that's introduced in Year One. It's a great read.

Premise: This is the story of two young men, Bruce Wayne, and Lieutenant James Gordon, who operate on opposite sides of the law (or so Gordon thinks), but find over the course of a year that they have a lot in common. The emphasis is obviously on how a man becomes a hero, as Wayne tries various techniques at fighting crime, making mistakes along the way, before becoming the Batman we know and recognize. In addition to fighting crime, he also meets Selina Kyle, who will soon be known as Catwoman...

Filming: There's no production date for this movie, but with Darren Aronofsky next filming The Last Man (starring Brad Pitt), the earliest it could start would be sometime in early 2003 (and that's pushing it).

Genre: Action, Crime, Eye Candy

The Hulk
Release Date: June 20th, 2003

Release Date Notes:

1/14/02 - (Universal now has competition in the form of Sony's Charlie's Angels 2: Halo, which is also gunning for this spot... clearly, two such high profile projects are not going to open against each other; one of them will move... but which, and how long will they wait to make the inevitable switcheroo? Fun fun!; (4/18/02) Sure enough! Sony has moved CA2: Halo back a week to June 27th, 2002.

Distributor: Universal Pictures

Title Note:

2/23/00 - The comic book was long known as The Incredible Hulk, but the film will drop the Incredible to be just The Hulk. (5/3/02) Although the logo that flashes at us in the teaser trailer says just Hulk, a closer look at the end credits shows The Hulk.

Production Company: Valhalla Motion Pictures (Bounty Killer, Armageddon, Virus)

Visual Effects: This film will be a combination of live-action and CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) for the Hulk (no human, no matter how "pumped" he is, could accurately play the monstrous beast that is the comic book version of the Hulk).

Cast: Eric Bana (Dr. Bruce Banner), Jennifer Connelly (Betty Ross), Sam Elliott (General "Thunderbolt" Ross), Mike Erwin (Teenage Bruce Banner), Lou Ferrigno (cameo), Brooke Langton (Jennifer Sossman), Josh Lucas (Glenn Talbot), Nick Nolte (Bruce's father); other cast not announced yet.

Director: Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ride with the Devil, Sense and Sensibility, The Ice Storm, Eat Drink Man Woman; he may direct another project, possibly Houdini, before this)

Digitial Effects: Industrial Lights and Magic (ILM)

Screenwriter: (see notes below) Michael Tolkin (The Player; cowriter of Deep Impact; he's also working on Changing Lanes); rewrite by David Hayter (X-Men; also has X², The Chronicles of Riddick and Watchmen in development); rewrite by James Schamus (Ang's frequent writing partner; he has credits on most of Ang's films)

Screenwriter Notes: Michael France (cowriter of Goldeneye, Cliffhanger) has long been involved with this project, but he wasn't mentioned in the 5/17/00 announcement that Michael Tolkin had been brought onto this project, so it's possible his script won't be used. (4/14/01) Ang Lee has been talking about this film quite a bit lately, such as to USA Today this week, and what's he said more than once suggests that he's going to throw out Universal's scripts and start from scratch himself.

Based Upon: The character published by Marvel Comics. There was also a 1970's TV show loosely based upon the character (lacking most of the elements of the comic book) that led to some TV movies in the 1980's and 1990's; all of which starred Bill Bixby as David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk. Hopefully, this movie will be more like the comics, and less like the TV show.

Sequel Note:

10/17/01 - As you'd expect, Universal is hoping to kick off a series of films, including options for two sequels in Bana's contracts (substantially increasing his salary each time). (12/8/01) Thinking of what direction the sequels might take, I thought I'd submit this idea. In the comics, Connelly's character of Betsy Ross becomes exposed to gamma rays herself, which turn her into a creature called the Harpy, a "bird woman" with green skin, wings and talons. (3/29/02) I should note that there have been some erroneous reports that Jennifer Connelly's character could become the "She-Hulk" in a sequel. She-Hulk, if she ever shows up, is actually Jennifer Walters, the L.A. lawyer cousin of Bruce Banner, who gets a blood transfusion from him that gives her superhuman strength, green skin, etc.

Premise:

12/01/00 - According to Entertainment Weekly, this will tell the tale of Dr. Bruce Banner, exposed to Gamma Rays and transformed into the Hulk, a creature of incredible strength. Chased across the country by the military (and General "Thunderbolt" Ross), he runs into a man named Crusher Creel (who would be played by "Goldberg"), who can take on the properties of things he touches (you might call him The Absorbing Man). (1/13/01) The Hollywood Reporter story about Ang Lee's involvement mentioned that part of what appealed to him was the love story in the script (probably with Betty Ross, daughter of General Ross). (11/28/01) The setting for the film will be the Berkeley campus, and not a desert military base as in the comic book origin story. (12/31/01) There will still be a military base (run, of course, by General Ross). (2/20/02) Lucas has signed on to play Glenn Talbot, long-time friend of Betty Ross and rival to Bruce Banner (indeed, in the comics, she was, at one time, Mrs. Betty Talbot).

Who's the Absorbing Man?: When Crusher Creel touches iron, he becomes iron, when he touches fire, he becomes fire, etc. In the comics, the trick to defeating him, by the way, is often to get him to touch something breakable, like glass painted to look like steel. Watch out to see if they include that trick in the film. So, how did Crusher Creel get this power? In the comics, he got it from the Norse God of Mischief, Loki, the evil brother of Thor (in other words, he started as a Thor villain and migrated to Hulk). Since Loki is no doubt being saved by Marvel for a Thor TV series or movie, this script will probably find a new origin. (10/15/01) It's very possible that in Ang Lee's version, Crusher Steel will no longer be included.

Comic Book Premise: Dr. Bruce Banner is a scientist working on a powerful new "Gamma Ray" bomb. During a test of the bomb, Banner runs out to save the life of a reckless youth, Rick Jones, which leads to Banner accidentally bearing the brunt of the Gamma Rays. Instead of killing him, the strange radiation causes him to gain body mass from a mysterious source and become a huge green monster when he becomes angry....

Grey Hulk Note: One interesting detail that Corona's Coming Attractions reported is that the Hulk will have two manifestations in the film, starting with the Grey Hulk, which was smaller, and then progressing to the huge green (and mentally vacant and savage) Hulk that we all know and love. Most people are less familiar with the Grey Hulk, but if the Grey Hulk is kept, the film will indeed follow the progress that the character went through in the 1960's; as the original Hulk was indeed grey.

Filming: Production started on March 18th, 2002 in Arizona, before moving on, in early April, 2002 to the San Francisco/Berkeley area (including UC-Berkeley). There was also filming at Treasure Island in San Francisco, and near the Sequouia National Forest. There may also be some filming on the Universal Studios lot in L.A.

Genre: Action, Eye Candy, Science Fiction

Star Wars Episode III (2005)
Release Date: May 25th, 2005 (the 28th anniversary of the original release of Star Wars)

Title Note: (5/25/00) The full title of this film is not yet known. As with The Phantom Menace, I think it's likely that the title will be announced only relatively shortly before the release in 2005.

Distributor: 20th Century Fox

Cast: Hayden Christensen (Anakin/Vader), Natalie Portman (Amidala), Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Kenny Baker (R2D2), Ahmed Best (Jar Jar Binks), Anthony Daniels (C3PO), Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu), Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu), James Earl Jones (voice of Darth Vader), Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine), Jimmy Smits (Senator Bail Organa), Frank Oz (Yoda)

New Cast: Gabriel Byrne (in talks)

Director: George Lucas (Star Wars: A New Hope, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, THX 1138, American Graffiti)

Screenwriter: George Lucas (Star Wars: A New Hope, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, THX 1138, American Graffiti; cowriter of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones)

Based Upon: This is the third film in the popular science fiction series, chronologically, following Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and preceding Star Wars: A New Hope.

Premise: Details of this film are fairly sketchy, and probably hinge greatly upon what happens in Episode II, which of course, we don't really, truly know yet. Expect this film to see Anakin completely changing into Darth Vader, the rise of the Empire, the Clone Wars, the fall of the Republic, the scattering of the Jedi, etc... it's going to seem pretty "down". (Though there will also be the little rays of light, such as the likely introduction of Luke and Leia as infants, or at least their implied pregnancy). (5/12/02) While talking to StarWars.com, Natalie Portman has confirmed Padme will be pregnant. (6/25/02) Talking to TheForce.net, George Lucas noted that this final film takes place just two or three years after the end of Episode II.

Death Note: This probably goes without saying... but I'll say it anyway, but just without getting specific. Something that we can expect in Episode III (which will probably start happening in Episode II as well) is that several characters who don't appear in Star Wars Episode IV will probably be killed off (or just die). There's only a handful of characters who do reappear, so... this applies to almost everyone else. They won't all necessarily die, but let's just say it's more likely than their survival rate. Dark finale indeed.

Filming: Production is scheduled to start in January, 2003. Fox Studios in Sydney, Australia will be where much of the set work is done. Other possibilities are Italy (Naboo) and Tunisia (Tattoine).

Genre: Action, Eye Candy, Science Fiction

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
Release Date: November 15th, 2002 (just a day shy of a year after the release of the first film)

Distributor: Warner Bros.

Cast: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Sean Biggerstaff (Oliver), David Bradley (Argus Filch), Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart), Alfred Burke (Armando Dippet), John Cleese (Nick the Nearly Headless Ghost), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Alfie Enoch, Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Julian Glover (voice of Aragog the Spider), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Richard Griffiths (Uncle Dursley), Richard Harris (Professor Dumbledore), Shirley Henderson (Moaning Myrtle), Joshua Herdman (Gregory Goyle), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), Gemma Jones (Madam Pomfrey), Toby Jones (Dobby the House Elf), Matt Lewis (Neville Longbottom), Miriam Margolyes (Professor Sprout), Rik Mayall (Peeves the Poltergeist), Hugh Mitchell (Colin Creevey), Sally Mortemore (Madam Pince), Devon Murray (Seamus), Katharine Nicholson (Pansy Parkinson), Edward Randell (Justin Finch-Fletchley), Chris Rankin (Percy Weasley), Alan Rickman (Snape), Fiona Shaw (Aunt Petunia), Maggie Smith (Prof. Minerva McGonagall), Ed Tudor-Pole (Mr. Borgin), Julie Walters (Mrs. Weasley), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), Jamie Waylett (Vincent Crabbe), Mark Williams (Mr. Weasley)

Cast Note:

9/28/01 - Having not read the books, I don't know which characters from the first film don't appear in the second film, so the list below should be taken with that grain of salt... it is a merging of actors known to be in the first film, with actors who weren't. I'd also mention that it's possible there characters who weren't in the Chamber of Secrets book may still pop up here (cameos).

Director: Chris Columbus (Stepmom, Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Bicentennial Man)

Other Characters:

4/13/01 - Thanks to The Harry Potter Galleries, here's a list of characters not in Sorcerer's Stone that are likely to be added to this second film: Mr. Borgin, Penelope Clearwater, Colin Creevey, Dobby, Gilderoy Lockhart, Ernie McMillan, Lucius Malfoy, Mr. and Mrs. Mason, Moaning Myrtle, Tom Riddle, and Professor Sinistra. (6/30/01) The same site reports that Hugh Grant may have revealed that he's in talks to play Lockhart. (7/18/01) Popcorn asked Grant's publicist, and she denied that talks had taken place. (9/28/01) The Daily Mail reports that Grant has indeed signed on, even dying his hair blonde for the role after a wig proved too garish. (10/1/01) Well, that didn't last long. Empire has confirmed that Grant is indeed out, due to scheduling conflicts with his Sandra Bullock project and the It Started with Eve remake. (12/27/01) BBC reports that two more of those have been cast. (1/27/02) Michael Fleming of Variety reports that Jason Isaacs is playing Lucius Malfoy, and will return for the 4th film.

Screenwriter: Steven Kloves (Wonder Boys, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Racing with the Moon, The Fabulous Baker Boys; he's already working on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)

Based Upon: The second book in the popular series of children's books by J.K. Rowling, following Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Next up after this (in 2003 or 2004?) will be Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Premise: The premise of this second book/film seems quite complex, so I'm going to point you to this review, courtesy of The Mystery Reader, which seems to detail the many elements fairly thoroughly.

The Other Movies:

4/13/01 - The current sequel status is that WB has the rights to the first four books, and if the series (of films) continues to be successful, could make as many as 7 movies to match the total of 7 books J.K. Rowling has planned. At the time of this writing, there are four Harry Potter books. In order, they are: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The fifth book is expected sometime in 2002. (4/17/02) Entertainment Weekly reports that the fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, is tentatively expected in late 2002 (depending upon whether Rowling finishes it). (6/4/02) Variety reported this week that the fifth book is now expected tentatively for June, 2003.

Filming: Production started on November 19th, 2001, with most filming done in and around London (mostly Leavesden Studios). There is an obvious time factor for this series that is being considered, as Radcliffe, Grint, Watson and the other child actors will continue to age past the age of the characters if the sequels aren't filmed promptly; but also, there are other matters to consider (like the time it takes to make an epic of this scale).

Genre: Action, Based on a Book, Eye Candy, Fantasy, Kids, Sequel

Spider-Man II (2004)
Release Date: May 7th, 2004 (closely patterned after the May 3rd, 2002 release of the first movie)

Title Note: (7/16/02) According to promotional art that Columbia Pictures is disseminating at license trade shows, the title of this sequel is not "Spider-Man 2", but with a roman numeral, as "Spider-Man II" (source: Corona).

MPAA Rating Note: (7/16/02) Nothing's official until the MPAA sees the final cut, but it's extremely likely (nay, pretty much guaranteed) that this film is aiming for a PG-13 (last time, the MPAA cited "stylized violence and action").

Distributor: Columbia Pictures (Sony)

Production Company: Marvel Entertainment (Daredevil, The Hulk, Iron Man), Laura Ziskin Productions (Spider-Man)

Cast: Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man), Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane Watson), Bruce Campbell; other cast not announced yet, but it's likely that much of the supporting cast from the first movie will be returning as well.

Director: Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, A Simple Plan, Army of Darkness, The Gift, Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn)

Screenwriter: David Koepp (Spider-Man, Panic Room, Stir of Echoes) (first draft); rewrite by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (writing team of Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights; cowrote Showtime)

Based Upon: This is the sequel to the 2002 blockbuster hit, and current (7/16/02) #1 movie of the year, Spider-Man, which set the record for a three-day opening weekend at $114.844 million, and has taken in over $400 million, just in the U.S. alone. Both movies are, of course, based upon the character created by Steve Ditko (art) and Stan Lee (writing), as first published in "Amazing Fantasy #15" in 1962 by Marvel Comics.

Trilogy Note: (7/16/02) Sony made sure to sign both Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst for *two* sequels, although Sam Raimi is not likewise signed for the third film (yet). Presuming that this sequel doesn't bomb, the third movie is pretty much a certainty, though we probably won't see it in theaters any earlier than 2006 or 2007.

Villains Note: (7/16/02) The early development of this sequel was a bit odd, because Sony first hired Shanghai Knights writing team Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to work on it in April, 2002, before announcing two months later that David Koepp was going to write his own script, from which Gough and Millar would then do a rewrite.

This screenwriter note is important to state at this point, because most of what is online about the new characters in this sequel comes from actress Kirsten Dunst, and it all predates the Koepp news in early June. In other words... if Koepp is doing his own thing separate from what Millar and Gough started on, it's possible that anything Dunst said before June 11th, 2002 is no longer true. Koepp's story idea may have completely different villains (at one point, the villains of the first film were supposed to be the Sandman and Elektro, for example).

Specifically, Dunst first told ComingSoon.net back in April, 2002 that the villains were to be Doctor Octopus and the Lizard. Dunst then told "Wizard" magazine in early June that Felicia Hardy, aka the Black Cat, may be brought in as a romantic interest for Peter in this second film (this was also before Koepp came aboard). Since both of her revelations predate Koepp's new story idea, however... they may both be completely irrelevant at this point. I do have a hunch, though, that even if the Lizard and the Black Cat are dropped, Doctor Octopus probably does remain a shoo-in to be one of the villains in this movie.

Premise: Nothing official has been announced yet (7/16/02) about this sequel (see villain notes above), except that mild-mannered science student, part-time photojournalist and occasional web-crawling superhero Peter Parker is now attending college at New York City's (fictional) Empire State University, after having graduated from high school in the first movie.

Filming: Production is scheduled to start in January, 2003 at Sony's soundstages in Los Angeles. The first movie also started filming in a January (1/8/01), to make an early May release a year later.

Genre: Action, Eye Candy, Sequel, Science Fiction, Superhero, Teen

X-Men 2 (2003)
Release Date: May 2nd, 2003

Release Date Note: (8/5/02) Before Fox announced the 5/2/03 release date, they had originally been aiming for December, 2002.

Title Note:

5/28/00 - (5/28/00) There is no official title for this sequel yet, but it's very possible that they will go with something a bit more inventive than X-Men 2; for now, that's what I've got. (12/13/01) The title has been confirmed as X2. (6/3/02) That "X2" thing is actually just a promotional title (like "M:I-2" was for Mission: Impossible 2. The actual title is indeed still "X-Men 2".

Distributor: 20th Century Fox

Cast: Patrick Stewart (Prof. Charles Xavier), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Famke Janssen (Jean Grey), Halle Berry (Storm), Brian Cox (William Stryker), Alan Cumming (Kurt Wagner, AKA Nightcrawler), Bruce Davison (Senator Kelly), Kelly Hu (Anne Reynolds, AKA Yuriko Oyama, AKA Lady Deathstrike), James Marsden (Cyclops), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (Mystique), Shawn Ashmore (Bobby Drake, AKA Iceman), Daniel Cudmore (Piotr Rasputin, AKA Colossus), Shauna Kain (Theresa Cassidy, AKA Siryn), Michael Reid McKay (Jason, AKA 143), Cotter Smith (President McKenna), Aaron Stanford (John/Pyro), Katie Stuart (Kitty Pryde), Connor Widdows (Jones), Peter Wingfield (Lyman), Kea Wong (Jubilee)

New Mutant: There was a new mutant introduced in the first film... or it at least looks like a new mutant. (scroll for spoiler: I'm talking about Senator Kelly). Anyway, it's a mutant who seems to be water-based, but also has a plasticity (stretchy like Mr. Fantastic). I can't think of an existing mutant who is quite like what we see in the movie; he may be someone who will come back in a more recognizable form, or may just be a dead end. We'll see. As you're trying to decipher this (especially if you think this character "died"), just remember what Magneto said about this person's "death", "Are you sure you saw what you saw?" There are several mutants in Marvel's X-Universe that do not have material human bodies (Proteus, for example); the watery end we see in the movie could be the new mutant's true form.

Likely New X-Men: (5/28/00) Officially, no new X-Men (or the actors playing them) have been announced, but the three that Bryan Singer mentioned in a recent (5/00) Wizard magazine interview were Gambit (Cajun guy with energy powers) and Beast (furry blue guy with big feet), and Nightcrawler (blue guy, a wee less fur, has a tail, teleports). One possibility for the sequel is that there could be cameos of other fan favorites (as there are in the first film). Gambit, Beast, and Nightcrawler, however, are the only team members Singer mentioned. (7/7/00) Cinescape reports that producer Lauren Shuler Donner confirms that Gambit will definitely be in the second film. (7/24/00) There's something in the Magneto prequel comic book that foreshadows the introduction of Beast. Xavier rescues a young boy who's being attacked by mutie-haters. There's a bit of a red herring thrown at us by the fact that he's wearing red glasses (suggesting that he's Cyclops), but Prof. X calls him Hank, and if you look closely, you'll notice that he has Hank McCoy's trademark big feet. It's also interesting to note that this changes his origin (Hank was a gregarious football star in the comics), and his appearance, making him thin and gawky rather than big and beefy. (11/25/01) The latest news, as reported by Dark Horizons and Corona, is that there may only be one new X-Men lead mutant: Nightcrawler, although that doesn't mean there won't be several others in smaller roles. I'd also note that the script is still being worked on, so it's possible Nightcrawler will have company when filming starts. (4/17/02) AICN reports the new mutants may now be Nightcrawler (no surprise), Angel, and... Madeline Pryor. (5/20/02) This AICN script review doesn't mention Pryor. (6/18/02) Reports sent to Corona recently suggest that there are cameos in the film for Beast, Colossus (with a professional wrestler recently saying on MTV that he auditioned for the role), and Gambit. (7/12/02) The Angel cameo appears to be a sure thing as well. (7/25/02) Corona reports that young Shauna Kain has signed on to play Theresa Cassidy, AKA Siryn, one of Professor Xavier's students, whose father in the comics is Banshee, one of the mutants who joined the team when Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus did (but he probably won't appear in this film). Like her father, Siryn can do amazing things like destroy solid objects, and fly, using her amazingly powerful "scream."

Director: Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil)

Screenwriter: Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty (both are making their auspicious feature film debuts here)

Screenwriter Notes:

6/18/01 - Fox has reportedly hired two different screenwriters to try their hand at a sequel: David Hayter (X-Men) and Zak Penn (Behind Enemy Lines). There's no firm word yet on which will be used (or even, maybe elements of both will be merged into one screenplay). (11/21/01) Hayter is now the sole writer. (4/29/02) Debut screenwriters Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty may also be working on this now (Corona). (5/30/02) Harris and Dougherty are confirmed, with Hayter no longer listed as being credited.

Based Upon: This is the sequel to X-Men, and is based upon the popular superhero team that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. If things go well, there will be an X-Men 3 in 2004 or so.

Premise: (5/28/00) Officially, there is no word yet about what this sequel might be about. Some of the villains that have been mentioned include the Sentinels (giant mutant hunting robots), Proteus (mutant who can alter reality), Dark Phoenix (Jean Grey evolved into this character; long story), and Arcade (creates deathtraps). Of those, the most likely is the Sentinels, as Bryan Singer told Wizard magazine, "The villain would be man. Mankind." However, as is often the case with superhero movies, there may be a second (or third or fourth) villain thrown in to keep the team busy... (7/14/00) We see what may be young versions of a few of the team's villains in the first movie: Pyro, the Blob (very chubby boy), and the Vanisher (young boy who can teleport in a way quite different from Nightcrawler). (7/24/01) Reporting from Comic-Con, Dark Horizons quoted Bryan Singer as saying the rumors of the Legacy virus being in the film are false, but that there probably will be Sentinels (we knew this), though it isn't yet decided if they'll look like humans (stupid idea, next), or huge robots (why, of course they should!). (12/8/01) 13thStreet.com reports that the official premise involves the "Legacy virus", a disease that kills only mutants, created by humans who hope to eliminate Homo Superior for good. It's up to the X-Men to stop the man behind the Legacy virus, as well as prevent the disease's spread. So... does this mean that the Sentinels are no longer included? (5/17/02) AICN posted a script review this week that claimed the much-changing premise no longer has anything to do with Sentinels or the Legacy Virus whatsoever. (6/3/02) With the announcement that Kelly Hu is playing a character called Anne who is an aide to William Stryker, it appears that the premise bears at least some similarities or ties to the graphic novel "God Loves, Man Kills", in which Anne was a member of a group called "The Purifiers" who worked for the anti-mutant evangelist Rev. Stryker, on a mission to kill all mutants. (6/12/02) There's a lot that isn't clear about this premise, but one thing is... comic fans: forget all that you know. Just when we thought we had this "Anne" character figured out, Kelly Hu tells E! News (as related to Comics2Film.com) that her character is also known as Lady Deathstrike. Lady Deathstrike has nothing to do with GLMK, but is instead connected to Wolverine's origin, as her father was believed to be the scientist who laced Logan's bones with adamantium. She had the metal implanted in her hands to give herself claws (that look like metal fingernails) when she believed Logan was guilty of stealing the secret of the process from her father. That at least, is what she's like in the comics. In the movie... who knows, but since we know this film involves Wolverine's investigation into his origin (as hinted at the end of the first movie), her appearance makes sense. (6/18/02) Tying those loose ends together a bit, the movie's version of Stryker (Cox) also has ties to Wolverine's origin.

Filming: Production started on June 17th, 2002 (moved back four months from January) in Vancouver (moved from Toronto, where the first movie was primarily filmed). IGN FilmForce reports that filming is scheduled to wrap on October 6th, 2002.

Genre: Action, Eye Candy, Science Fiction, Sequel, Superhero

Batman vs. Superman (2004)
Release Date: Unknown; it will probably be a summer tentpole release of whatever year it's eventually slotted for.

Release Date Note: (8/13/02) Recently announced as a summer, 2004 release, it has now been put on hold while director Wolfgang Petersen concentrates on "Troy" for Warner Bros. first (preview page coming soon). The earliest we're likely to see this film now is summer, 2005.

Title Note: (7/17/02) For the last year or so (or longer, if you believe a report at Corona) that this project has been looming on the development horizon, it's often been known/listed as "World's Finest", though that was admittedly never official, but based on the fact that the idea of "Batman vs. Superman", to most comics fans smacks instantly of the premise of the long-running "World's Finest" comic book, in which the two heroes often/usually paired up (and were occasionally thrown against each other by villains, etc.).

MPAA Rating Note: (7/17/02) Nothing's official until the MPAA sees the final cut, but WB is definitely aiming for a PG-13, and they're likely to make sure they get one.

Distributor: Warner Bros.

Production Company: Radiant Productions (Air Force One, The Perfect Storm) (Wolfgang Petersen's production company)

Cast: None announced yet.

Cast Notes: (7/17/02) Obviously, everyone's big question is who will play the lead roles of Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent in this franchise-reviving epic. In the "Variety" article last week that confirmed him as director (he had merely been "in talks" for the last year), Wolfgang Petersen mentioned Matt Damon as "an interesting action man and a hell of an actor", as an example of the kind of people he's looking at. He also mentioned that he plans to be able to announce his two stars within two to four weeks (ie, by early August, 2002), and that there are also three main female roles (Lois Lane and whom else?). The first site to post a cast rumor was SuperHeroHype.com, running with a story from an unconfirmed source that Christian Bale (American Psycho, Reign of Fire) is a frontrunner for the role of Bruce Wayne.

(7/25/02) This week's issue of "Entertainment Weekly" included a story about this project, with a short list of casting possiblities of Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, James Franco, Jude Law and Paul Walker. Then, yesterday, movie fan Harry Jay Knowles ran a story from an unverified source that it was actually Farrell who was cast as Bruce Wayne, and Jude Law as Kal-El, but this story was quickly debunked by the reliable lads at Corona's Coming Attractions. For what it's worth, if Jude Law was actually signed to play the Big Blue Boy Scout, I'd be sort of elated, because I think he would be a brilliant, against-the-grain choice. With the solar rays of a yellow sun fueling him, why would the Last Son of Krypton need to be a bulked-up dude? Jude Law also has a certain exotic look in his eye that makes him seem otherworldly and... well, alien. That's something the Reeves (George and Christopher), and the other various Supermans missed... the "you're not from around here, are ya' boy?" quality of Kal-El.

(8/12/02) The rumor mill continues to churn, with a post at Superman Home Page on 8/6/02 claiming that Josh Hartnett has joined Jude Law (and others) as a contender for the role of Superman, with Colin Farrell signed to play Bruce Wayne. As with all of these casting rumors, time will ultimately tell who's for real, and which stories were just some clever fan boys engaged in wishful thinking. For what it's worth, this pairing is also what AICN is reporting as well.

Director: Wolfgang Petersen (Air Force One, In the Line of Fire, The Perfect Storm, Das Boot, Outbreak; his next project before this will be "Troy", due in 2004; preview page coming soon; one of the many other projects he has in development is Endurance)

Screenwriter: Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven, Sleepy Hollow, 8MM, Brainscan; cowriter of Hideway ; he's also got the movie version of "The Silver Surfer" in development; preview page coming soon)

Based Upon: This project is, of course, based upon DC Comics' two most popular characters, which they've been publishing for over 60 years (Superman since 1938, Batman since 1939). There have been several movies made over the years featuring either of them, but this will be the first feature film to feature both. It's also not a "sequel" to any pre-existing movie (not, for example, Batman & Robin, starring George Clooney or Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

Similar Projects: Both of the title characters have their own movies in development at Warner Bros., in the form of Batman: Year One and an untitled Superman project. It's possible one of those might be made in time for 2005 or 2006.

Kryptonite Note: (7/17/02) The natural reaction a person might have to the idea of Batman taking on Superman in a fight is that Batman would get creamed, but... the comic books have long given the Dark Knight an advantage. Down in the Batcave, Batman keeps a kryptonite ring, "just in case". This movie may not use exactly that approach, but I thought it was worth pointing out that the fight is not necessarily all one-sided.

Premise: Not much is known yet (7/17/02) about the exact details of this film's premise, except that it involves a situation where the differing philosophical approaches of the caped guardians of Gotham City and Metropolis, long-time allies Batman and Superman, pit them against each other (and that this film does not follow the continuity of either of the previous Batman or Superman movies). There are rumors that the main villains are the Joker and Lex Luthor, but that's not confirmed. Also, I notice that Wolfgang Petersen keeps mentioning September 11th a lot... and how something horrible happens that sends Batman over the edge. Is it possible that something horrible, a sort of "cataclysm" (hint, hint, comics fans) happens to Gotham City?

Filming: Production is tentatively scheduled to start in February, 2003 (or possibly March at the latest), to make a summer, 2004 release. Filming is expected to last five or six months, followed by nearly a year of intensive special effects and CGI postproduction.

Genre: Action, Eye Candy, Science Fiction, Sequel, Superhero

The Matrix: Reloaded (2003)

Release Date: May 15th, 2003

Release Date Notes: May 15th, 2003 is a Thursday, making this WB's first non-Holiday Thursday release ever, moved up a day from May 16th, 2003. The date before that was a week later on May 23rd, which was the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend. Before filming started, the original target release was May/June 2002, and then December 25th, 2002.

MPAA Rating: The first film was rated R, so it is very likely that the sequels will be as well.

Title Note: (1/7/00) It's possible that this film may have a subtitle besides just being The Matrix 2. Some of the concepts that could be used in a subtitle include Neo, Zion, The Construct, etc. (5/10/01) Indeed. Corona broke the news that the title will be The Matrix: Reloaded.

Distributor: Warner Bros.

Cast: Keanu Reeves (Neo), Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus), Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith), Christine Anu, Steve Bastoni (Captain Sorren), Monica Bellucci, Daniel Bernhardt (Agent Johnson), Collin Chou, Nona Gaye (Zee), Lachy Hulme (Sparks), Roy Jones, Jr. (Captain Ballard), Harry Lennix (Lock), Matt McColm (Agent Thompson), Monique Montez, Harold Perrineau, Jr., Jada Pinkett-Smith (Niobi), Rupert Reid, Che Timmins (Radio Man), Gina Torres (Cass, Dozer's widow), Clayton Watson (The Kid), Lambert Wilson

Aaliyah Note: (8/25/01) With costar Aaliyah killed tragically in an airplane accident, it is not yet known how much of her central role was filmed, or if the role will need to be recast. I suspect that if the latter is the case, WB will wait a respectful amount of time (but not too long) before they announce it. (4/10/02) The role has gone to relative newcomer Nona Gaye.

Possible Returning Cast: The first movie introduced several supporting characters that could take on much larger roles in the sequels. They are...

Tank: As the film progressed, Tank's role grew in relevance, suggesting that in the sequel, he could be a major character. Tank is a "pure human" born outside the farms, who monitors their connections to the Matrix. (11/6/00) It appears that Chong might not be returning due to contract negotiations over salary. Over at The We Want Tank Coalition, they're trying to get fans of Chong to write WB in support of his casting. (3/28/01) The role of Tank has been recast with a different actor (whose name hasn't been revealed yet).

The Oracle: Gloria Foster. Here's one possibility... is she really a renegade agent/A.I.? (scroll to reveal possible spoiler) There's certainly hints to suggest it, such as her amazing awareness of the future of events within the Matrix. Another thing to consider is that we are told that the Nebuchednezzar must ascend to broadcasting range; and that Zion is deep within the Earth. Therefore, in order for the Oracle and her followers to be where they are all the time... they would have to be somewhere else besides Zion. How would they do that? Hmmm... (or of course, she could be in a pod... we don't know). (10/7/01) Ms. Foster died on Saturday, September 29th, of diabetes. She had completed most of her work in this film.

Choi and DuJour: Marc Grey, Ada Nicodemou (First off, let me note that I thought for sure his name was Troy, but in fact, he's credited as "Choi". Anyway, my understanding of Choi, DuJour, and their friends, is that they are the crew of another ship similar to the one captained by Morpheus. As such, since they apparently helped out Morpheus in the first film, we may guess they'll be around to help again in the sequels.)

Spoon Boy and the Potentials: Rowan Witt, many other child actors. (1/7/00) Wow, that's a great name for a band. Got a musical talent... grab it, fast! Anyway, Spoon Boy had a great cameo role in The Matrix, and seems like the sort of character we could see in the future, as he matures in his process.) (3/30/01) As it turns out, someone did grab the band name. They're in Indianapolis.

Agents Brown and Jones: Paul Goddard, Robert Taylor (There's not really much to say about them... except that I hope we continue to see them as a pair. Their brief scenes together seemed to show a natural teamwork; especially when they're scared.

Cast Member Not Returning: Joe Pantoliano (Cypher)

Director: Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski (Bound, The Matrix, The Matrix Revolutions)

Screenwriter: Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski (Bound, The Matrix, The Matrix Revolutions)

Based Upon: This is of course the sequel to the popular 1999 film, The Matrix. It's to be followed by The Matrix Revolutions. There will also be Matrix Anime, a collection of episodes by famous Anime directors, released to video in late 2002 or early 2003.

Premise: (1/7/00) Nothing official has been announced. However, we do know that these films will be sequels (not prequels), and that we will see Neo as a superhuman figure capable of amazing feats. (as seen in The Matrix near the end; he demonstrated flight, time-control, super-speed, etc.) Much more than that is probably just rumor and speculation at this point. So... speculate away! (Just after I wrote that, one idea came to mind... I might guess there could be a baby Neo in the sequels?) One thing that is known is that this film will most likely end with a cliffhanger that leads directly to The Matrix Revolutions. (8/12/00) As hinted by the end of the first film, you will indeed see Neo in lots of flying scenes. (2/6/02) Laurence Fishburne revealed to ET that the film takes place six months after the first, after many more people have been "awakened" to the real world. (7/25/02) Producer Joel Silver told the UK movie magazine "Empire" that the sequels are not two separate movies, but a really long movie cut in half, that all takes place in a 24-hour span, and that Monica Bellucci plays an evil temptress. This "first half" is spent largerly in the Matrix as Neo learns more about his "superheroic" abilities, including the ability to see the code, etc. of the people and things around him.

Filming: Production on these sequels started with 12 weeks of filming in and around Oakland, CA in March, 2001. The schedule of actual filming for the two movies is estimated at around 250 days. There will also be filming in Australia sets, and on location in Chicago. (10/3/01) Filming in Sydney, Australia started on September 24th, 2001. (10/17/01) Filming of the two sequels is expected to wrap in Sydney in August, 2002.

Genre: Action, Eye Candy, Science Fiction, Sequel
