New Article: Is Spider-Man Driving People to Steal?
Restaurant notices promo items going missing.
May 02, 2002 - Is Spider-Man driving people to steal? The fast food chain Hardee's thinks so.
Hardee's stepped up to be the official fast food sponsor for the film when the first fast food chain, Taco Bell, bailed. With the anticipation for the film reaching a fever pitch, fans have been driving as far as 100 miles to reach a Hardee's store. Once there, they've been underwhelmed by the promotional offerings. To make up for the lack of promotional items to buy, the fans are taking the POP (point of purchase) items at a record rate.
"I've never seen anything like it," said one manager who asked not to be named. "I mean, we have posters disappear, stuff like that but we've had to request new items and counter cards several times. We have customers asking to buy the T-shirts our employees are wearing. Unfortunately, we couldn't do that if we wanted to because the shirts have to be returned. What a lot of these people don't realize is that we have to pay for these 'free' items they're walking off with."
While it may be costing the franchises money, some of the culprits say it's Hardee's' own fault.
"Look at this crap," one fan told me during a visit this week. "No toys or decent promos. Just some really cheaply made plastic cups and some Spider-Man antenna bobbers. I drove here for this? If I could snag a poster or that T-shirt hanging on the wall, I'd do it in a heartbeat."
Hardee's corporate office had no comment on the thefts of the promotional items, except to say that "we are very happy with the overall response our association with the film has brought us."
