LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The eagerly awaited update of "Superman" fell prey to kryptonite again.
For the third time, the long-gestating Warner Bros. project has lost its director. Helmer McG dropped out of the project due to a difference of opinion on shooting location, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
McG, born Joseph McGinty Nicol, preferred to shoot in the Big Apple, whereas the studio had its sights Down Under.
"When I flew to New York to scout, I became enamored with our greatest American city," says McG. "It was clear to me that this was Metropolis. As a filmmaker, I felt it was inappropriate to try to capture the heart of America on another continent. I look at Superman as a character that embodies all that is beautiful about America."
Casting and budget concerns were also issues. The budget is approximated at $200 million, which is on par with another comic book franchise adaptation, "Spider-Man 2" currently in theaters.
With McG's departure, Warner Bros. is no longer required to go with the script written by ABC's "Alias" creator J.J. Abrams.
Previous directing candidates include Tim Burton with Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel followed by Brett Ratner, who championed casting soap star Matt Bomer. Jude Law and Josh Hartnett are other names that had been considered to play Superman.
McG, the thirtysomething award-winning music video director, is best known for helming the girl power action flick "Charlie's Angels" in 2000 and its sequel "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" three years later. ____________________________________
I dont think they should do "Superman" in New York, i mean, everybody knows that "Spiderman" is the hero over there. I know it wouldnt be exactly New York because it supossed to be Metropolis but still New York has so many places that people can identify and it would be weird.
And about the cast, Nicholas Cage, Jude Law? i dont think they fit at all, Matt Borner maybe but im not so sure about it, Josh Hartnett is a great actor but he doesnt have a face that screams Superman or Clark Kent. |
