Have you ever noticed that pretty much every recent movie that contains a marriage proposal is always a set-up for failure?

What does that say about the institution these days?

There is a doomed proposal in Fools Rush In and Singles and So, I Married an Axe Murderer, but the ultimate is of course Runaway Bride.

In Jerry Maguire (1996), Jerry (Tom Cruise) plans to give a ring to his girlfriend at the top of a mountain in Hawaii, but as he struggles to reach the summit, she yells down, "Hurry up klutz!" and the ring remains in his pocket. When they return to the hotel, Jerry's assistant has the lobby band to play "Here Comes The Bride." And like a deer caught in the headlights, Jerry pulls out the ring and asks her to marry him … it’s a truly painful scene.

RUN FATBOY RUN is another one of these movies--a hilarious romantic comedy directed by Friends star David Schwimmer. How did it turn out? I don't want to spoil it for other viewers, but let's just say the ending was a bit of a pleasant surprise. I somewhat agree with your point about our institutions. One needn't look any further than the recent marriage/divorce statistics to see why the movie industry is pumping out films with these sort of themes.
