Default HIV+ muppet added to Sesame Street..opinions?

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...ca_muppet_dc_1

oooh discussion

What do YOU think about Sesame Street adding an HIV Positive muppet to the cast? Do you think by doing so, it could be a positive approach to teaching children about HIV and AIDS?

Although I haven't personally seen the show, and am not quite sure what the approach they're using is, I think it could be a more gentle and positive way to teach children what it's like living with HIV and AIDS. Although the disease is a harsh subject, I think children, no matter what age SHOULD be taught about it. Millions of people, including young children, die from it daily. It's becoming a HUGE problem, and I think part of the reason that it is, is because people don't have enough information on it, and are not taught about it. I personally never really learned much about HIV and AIDS in school, and at the rate people are contracting it, I think more awareness should be raised. Incorporating the subject into a kids show is a brilliant idea. Opinions please?

well, its for the kids in South Africa because 1 on 10 people got HIV there (ive seen it on the news this morning). I think its good they do something like that. but not all people got a tv there so its not the only thing they should do about giving kids information.

Its seems like a good idea but i dont know if children of the age group the show is aimed at will really understand the real meaning of it.

I think that there should be more awareness about this subject in the US , however i dont think that adding a character into a sesame street its aiming at the right crowd.

Dont get me wrong i think that kids should be taught about various things at a young age, however parents need to focus more on this.

The show is aimed at kids my nephews age and he cant understand my dad's heart condition and all we told him that is "grandad has a poorly heart" and he still doesnt get what that means so I very much doubt a cute furry character on tv is gonna help him understand HIV or aids... i say aim it at 6/7 year olds when they start comprehending such stuff.

The character is a she and looks really cute and fluffy tho

I think its a smart move, but I think it may be pointless. The kids that watch the show that are like 1-5 wont understand what HIV is.
