Everyone's favorite green muppet turns 50 today! Yippee! Happy Birthday Kermit!!!
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Hi ho. It may not be easy being green, but Kermit the Frog has endured it for 50 years.
The spindly-armed Muppet amphibian, who sings circles around rival Michigan J. Frog, is celebrating half a century in the giant lily pond of life in September.
"Well, you know, it's interesting being 50," Kermit tells the AP. "You start to reflect on your life. And you look back over the years at everything you've ever done. And, with age, middle age, comes wisdom. But I have to say that I'm not sure that 50 for me is the same as 50 in people years."
Kermit first began appearing with his human pal, puppetteer Jim Henson in the mid-'50s on "Sam and Friends," a local Washington, D.C. television show. In the late '60s, he went national in the TV movie "Hey Cinderella" and on long-running children's series "Sesame Street."
Kermit, who's consistently fended off the advances of porcine princess Miss Piggy, was honored with a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002. His smooth croaking on "The Rainbow Connection" from 1979's "The Muppet Movie" landed him at No. 74 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years ... 100 Songs list. Although he's best known to his younger audience -- especially with the recent release of the "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz" and "The Muppet Show: Season One" DVDs -- Kermit has decidedly adult tastes for his upcoming birthday blowout.
"Listen, you can send a stripper to my party if you like," he adds. "It won't affect me because, as you can see, I am appearing naked, which I always try to do because I'm kind of a natural guy."
