He didn't have a red suit, flying reindeer, or a big belly that shook like a bowl full of jelly, but Tom Cruise did manage to channel Santa Claus last week.
When the toothsome A-lister stopped into a Lexington, Virginia, Dairy Queen on Wednesday, he wasn't content to just satisfy his jones for an oh-so-tasty Peanut Butter Parfait. Instead, he decided to make a difference in the life of a young girl by coughing up some extra cash he had in his pocket.
According to the Roanoke Times, Cruise dropped $5,000 into a DQ donation box set up to help 11-year-old Ashley Flint, who almost died in a September go-cart accident. She has undergone surgery three times to repair the extensive damage caused by the crash, and her family has been struggling to pay mounting medical expenses.
The actor, who was in town to film scenes for Steven Spielberg's big-budget sci-fi flick "War of the Worlds," reportedly ponied up fifty $100 bills, or, in other words, all his loose change.
"He didn't know this girl at all," a DQ employee tells Access Hollywood. "They're complete strangers and he made the donation, which I thought was very charitable and right at Christmas, too."
Because Ashley suffered memory loss after the accident, she didn't know who Cruise was, but she tells the Times she plans to write him a thank-you note. "I'm going to say he's really cute," she explains.
While Ashley's mom is very grateful for her generous movie star sponsor, she tells the paper, "I appreciate anyone who put $1 in those jars."
Of course, Cruise being Cruise, his acts of heroism don't stop at the DQ, and we feel we would be remiss if we failed to mention his other recent act of gallantry. Two weeks ago, the megastar was filming on a ferry in Athens, New York, when a teen girl working as an extra fainted from the fumes, says the Saratogian newspaper.
Tom reportedly "leaped" across some cars to assist the young woman and was the first by her side. She was later treated at a local hospital. [/size]
