Teen actress Ashley Olsen is suing the National Enquirer for $40m, after a story that was printed linked her to a drugs scandal. The 18-year-old actress filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, claiming that she was devastated by an article which implicated her in what was described in the headline as a "drugs scandal".

In the lawsuit Olsen is seeking $20m for libel and a further $20m for invasion of privacy. The lawsuit filed says that there was nothing in the article to indicate that Ashley Olsen had used or sold drugs or that she knew of any drug use by a man whom she had dated.

The lawsuit said: "Freedom of the press is a valuable right, but it is not a license for gossipy tabloids to tar and feather innocent celebrities and destroy their reputations and businesses for the rags' profits."

Ashley Olsen and her twin sister Mary-Kate, who have both had successful television and film careers, operate a multi-million dollar entertainment empire.

Libel is a serious thing. It's not just simply not telling the whole story, it's downright telling a lie. I'd be pissed if I was Ashley. Yes, she is a celebrity and people will talk about her, but there's no need to make up false stories about her. I don't think she really needs the $40 million but I do think it's good she's doing something about it. Those who do this sort of thing need to be put in their place and understand that it's not cool and actions WILL be taken against those who choose to publish crap like this. Who knows, maybe she'll give the $$ to charity or something?

If someone printed a drugs story with me, I would do the same, I think the price is too much to sue for but its a serious story.
