My favorite wrestling show was the old WCW. Angles like the (old) nWo, the Flock, the rise of Goldberg, the mystery of Sting, the Wolfpac.. those were the best wrestling watching days of my life. Nothing could beat that. And at the time, nothing did. Not even the WWF.
After that I enjoyed the WWF angle about the Ministry and later on the Corporate Ministry, while Austin and McMahon were fighting the most classic battle in WWF history.
Those were the best of times of all Sports Entertainment, financially overal, but also rating wise, merchandise was boosted into the homes of the fans...
Ever since the WWF bought WCW it sure as hell went downhill. Why? Because the WWF screwed everything up. All wrestling fans were waiting for the battle between the WWF and the WCW. The anticipation went through the roof. Goldberg vs. Austin, nWo Hollywood vs. D-Generation X...
The invasion angle was gonna be it. WRONG. The only major players that the WWF could use as WCW representatives were Booker T and Diamond Dallas Page. This due to the fact that most big WCW wrestlers were chained to a Time Warner contract, which made them not being able to do anything but sit on the couch cashing checks...
So with the only big WCW wrestlers being Booker and DDP, the WWF did the unthinkable and screwed up those characters so bad, that every single one related to wrestling saw how bad it was. Those two wrestlers both have been the People's Champs for crying out loud. They were as popular as the Rock when they were still in WCW... And if that wasn't enough, the WWF even screwed up their own characters Stone Cold and the Rock. It was a disaster. A lot of fans lost respect for the company there, cause as bad as the Invasion angle turned out to be, it took way too long before it finally ended.
Then to get Stone Cold's popularity back, they invented the "What?" stuff. That was a desperation attempt, and hell did it work or not? WHAT?! Exactly.
But it didn't last long.. the WWE came up with the idea to revive the nWo (which has been revived by the WCW itself way too many times already..). But anyway, they did and the anticipation was again extremely high. But then it turned out to be fake once again. The WWE version of the nWo was not even worth to be in the shadows of the WCW one. It was bad.
Also, the WWE once again screwed up one of their major players going by the name of the Undertaker...
Then the WWE came up with the idea to seperate the company into two competative shows RAW and SmackDown!. The idea was to create the competition that was lost when they bought WCW. Everybody knows that competition is good for business. It started off slowly with the popularity, but it did gain a few ratings here and there.
Right now, I think the WWE is trying to climb out of the hole again with help of angles like Brock Lesnar, which still do quite good. Also, by reviving Hulkamania, the WWE gained a bit more popularity, but of course, old tricks rarely work multiple times...
Let's hope that the Rock, Triple H and Brock Lesnar can keep the WWE, and therefore the entire pro-wrestling devision up there. Though other small pro-wrestling companies are just waiting for a chance to rise up, so don't get your hopes up yet, guys.
