Cool WWE SummerSlam - The Official Thread

Hey guys! Coming to you LIVE on Sunday, August 21st, 2005 on PPV, WWE Presents SummerSlam. The show is broadcasting from the MCI Center in Washington D.C. So far, one match has been set for the PPV - WWE Champion John Cena vs. Chris Jericho for the WWE Title, put forth by RAW GM Eric Bischoff this past Monday on RAW. Be sure to watch RAW this coming Monday as "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan returns to answer HBK's SS challenge.

John Cena (c) vs. Chris Jericho

Ever since John Cena came to RAW in the 2005 Draft Lottery, Chris Jericho seemed to have a problem with the WWE Champion. Even dating back to his debut on the Highlight Reel on June 6, Chris Jericho tried getting under Cena’s skin. Jericho eventually got himself involved in a match for Cena’s WWE Championship at Vengeance in a Triple Threat Match as Christian rounded out the trio. Cena successfully defended his championship, but Jericho wasn’t involved in the outcome. Now Jericho has what he really wanted all along – a one-on-one shot against John Cena at SummerSlam.

On the surface, this seemed to start out as a friendly rivalry. Jericho seemed to welcome Cena to RAW on the Highlight Reel, but couldn’t allow Cena’s RAW debut interview to end without patting himself and his band Fozzy on the back first. Jericho claimed that Fozzy was a more successful musical act than Cena would ever be. As the weeks passed by, though, Jericho’s jealousy grew more and more intense, and he decided to make things personal, attacking the WWE Champion when he least expected it. With such personal attacks, Cena welcomed Jericho’s presence in the WWE Championship Match at Vengeance, but Jericho couldn’t take advantage.

Then Y2J had Cena on the Highlight Reel yet again. He started out by saying that Cena was indeed on a roll as of late and seemed to have everything going for him. But again, just as he did on June 6, Jericho insisted on making himself look good by showing footage of Fozzy playing in front of more than 50,000 screaming fans in England. Cena tried to just walk away, but Jericho goaded him to come back. Cena then unleashed a verbal diatribe on Jericho that enraged him. The WWE Champion accused Jericho of cheapening everything that he stood for. He went so far as to call Jericho “Y2-Cheap.” Not surprisingly, this war of words erupted into a heated brawl as they had to be separated by officials.

John Cena came out on the July 11 edition of RAW ready to settle the score at that very moment, but he was interrupted by RAW General Manager Eric Bischoff. Bischoff informed the champ that only he could make championship matches and that it would be Chris Jerich vs. John Cena at SummerSlam. Jericho seemed pleased and so did Bischoff. Until Cena laid out the GM with an F-U that is. So at SummerSlam, it will be the Ayatollah of Rock N’ Rollah vs. The Dr. of Thuganomics, Chris Jericho vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship.

Thumbs up

I'm really looking forward to the HBK/Hogan match, it's a truly historical match in the making!

I see another great match w/ John and Chris, in the end though I see Cena remaining the WWE Champ. "You want some, come get some!"

Just for us T, here's more on Shawn & Hogan's match -

YEARS LATER, HBK NEEDS ANSWERS

Shawn Michaels is “the showstopper.” His cocky and flamboyant style has made him one of the most recognized Superstars in WWE history. He has even referred to himself as an “icon” of sports-entertainment. And who could argue? He’s held nearly every major championship there is to hold. And at one point, he figuratively carried the company on his aching back.

But in this business, every Superstar is measured against the legendary specter of one man – the immortal Hulk Hogan. Could HBK measure up to Hogan? That’s the question that has been haunting Michaels since Hogan left WWE in the mid 1990s. It was a question Michaels never got a chance to answer, until now.

When Michaels stunned the world by nailing the Hulkster with Sweet Chin Music on RAW a few weeks back, it appeared on the surface to have been a split-second decision. The reality is Michaels resentment for Hogan had been brewing for decades.

When Shawn first arrived in WWE back in the late 1980s, Hulk Hogan was on top of the sports-entertainment mountain. The movement known as Hulkamania had become a pop-culture phenomenon, making Hogan one of the most recognizable names in the world. As a result of his enormous success, the Hulkster enjoyed all the perks often associated with being the top dog. Not only did Hogan fly first-class, get driven around in stretch limousines and stay in posh hotel rooms, but he was also the first Superstar to be given his own dressing room in every arena across the country.

Just a youngster at the time trying to make it big, Michaels watched Hogan as he gained all the accolades. With eyes wide open, Shawn was committed to become everything Hogan was, and more. Michaels knew he had the ability to be the best in the world, he just needed the platform to showcase his talents. Unfortunately, however, there was no room for Michaels on the top of the card. The 302-pound WWE Champion never saw Michaels, a mere 225 pounds, as a suitable opponent. As a result, Michaels was relegated to mid-card status while Hogan continued to tour the country in first-class style.

Despite being told he was not the same caliber of Hogan, Michaels continued to persevere. Eventually, Shawn used his athletic talents to literally force his way into the Intercontinental Championship picture. During this time, Michaels competed in some of the most exciting matches ever to be seen on WWE television. According to Michaels, this was the beginning of his rise to the top. According to Hogan, however, Michaels was still not big enough to main event a card with him.

Never one to take no for an answer, HBK continued to amaze audiences. Eventually, WWE officials were forced to take notice and give Michaels the chance he always wanted. Coincidentally, HBK’s shot at greatness came just after Hulk Hogan left WWE for WCW.

With Hogan out of the picture, Michaels did what he always set out to do – represent WWE as its top star. As WWE Champion, Michaels was finally afforded all the perks Hogan once had – he had the seat in first-class, the limo driver, the fancy hotel room, his own locker room… He even began to help those close to him make a name for themselves, just as Hogan did years earlier.

Shawn Michaels had it all. Or did he?

On the surface, HBK appeared to be happier than ever. He was finally the top star. He finally jumped all the hurdles to become the biggest name in the industry. But despite all his success, Michaels still had one demon lingering in the back of his mind. Even with the WWE Championship strapped securely around his waist, HBK often wondered if he would have been able to reach the same level of success if Hogan was still a member of WWE. Ultimately, Shawn Michaels questioned whether he could beat the legend of Hulk Hogan.

On July 4, 2005, HBK took the first step in answering the question he needs answered. When Michaels delivered Sweet Chin Music to Hulk Hogan, he was extending a challenge he knew the Hulkster could not refuse, a challenge 20 years in the making. While many have questioned the route Michaels has taken to make this dream match a reality, one thing is for certain, Shawn Michaels will have all his questions answered.

Can Shawn Michaels beat Hulk Hogan? HBK will finally find out at SummerSlam.

From WWE.com, the rematch between Dave and JBL has been added to the card for SS -

The self-proclaimed Wrestling God will get his rematch.

But it wasn’t that easy. JBL defeated Batista at The Great American Bash by disqualification after the World Heavyweight Champion unloaded chair shots on both JBL and Chief of Staff Orlando Jordan.

As a result, since JBL didn’t win the World Heavyweight Championship, SmackDown! General Manager Theodore Long was ready to grant Undertaker a match with Batista at SummerSlam. Undertaker defeated Muhammad Hassan in a No. 1 Contender Match at The Great American Bash.

But the shrewd JBL had a stipulation in his contract preventing Long from taking away his chance for a rematch. Long didn’t want to hear about JBL’s plans for legal action, and instead made JBL earn the rematch in a match with Undertaker on SmackDown! on July 28.

In an exhausting battle, Undertaker overcame interference form Orlando Jordan and had JBL all but pinned, only to have Randy Orton fly in and interfere with a devastating RKO. Moments later, it was JBL collecting the gift-wrapped victory and a spot in the SummerSlam main event.

Not to disrespect Randy Orton, because I love it when he runs in and does his RKO, but...

How many times is the WWE going to screw the Undertaker out of a world title? Are they trying to beat his WrestleMania win record or something? This storyline was too predictable, heh.

But, I guess it runs in the family, cause they're doing the same thing to Kane.

Anyways, if JBL wins it, I'm gonna puke. Just to say. And if Hogan wins I'm gonna puke too. And if Jericho wins I'm gonna puke just a little bit...

So I guess, after SummerSlam, you'll know how much vomit I'll be producing.

Talking about vomit, SummerSlam's theme music...

THANK YOU, STINGER! Since when does WWE associate themselves with hip hop, outside the realm of a character in a storyline? Fat Joe? Seriously.

But I think I heard them say it was only one of two theme songs. Hopefully the other one doesn't suck.
