| I really don't know what it takes to impress some people. Does Jesus Christ need to come down from Heaven and whoop Kane's ass to make it a good WrestleMania? Do there need to be tables, ladders and chairs everywhere? What does it take?
By no means do I think WM XX was the best WrestleMania ever. But it did not suck. I thought it was a quality show with a few interesting twists and turns.
Show/Cena match: It was a good match. Cena had a ton of energy, as did the crowd. Cena hit two FU's on Show, and got a little help from the custom knucks to win the match. Cena finally has a title. And that, my friends, is something to celebrate.
The Tag Title Matches: Both were kinda boring, considering neither had much of a storyline to them. But still, the champions were victorious in both cases. Two face teams won. That's something to be happy about.
Christian/Jericho match: I realize that a lot of people might be upset that Trish and Jericho aren't gonna be together. But this match was good too and Trish's heel turn, which I was not able to predict, is just going to make the story even juicier. Now we get to look forward to Jericho's quest for revenge.
Evolution/Rock 'n Sock match: Another good one. You know what? If you can't have fun and get a good laugh from watching Ric Flair try to do his version of the People's Elbow only to get knocked down and have Rock do that very move (while mocking Flair's strut in the mean time), then you would probably be better off giving up on watching wrestling anyway and instead going to look for your sense of humor and fun. I wasn't expecting Rock 'n Sock to lose. But the match was still good, it was still fun, and it lead to the continuation of Foley's quest for the last laugh on Orton.
Playboy Evening Gown Match: I don't know how anyone could say this match was the only one (along with the main event) worth watching. It was just another T&A match. Only difference was that they started with their clothes off. And yes, they followed all the cliche patterns of a typical T&A match. Slap eachother, roll around, beat eachother's heads on the mat, smile and giggle at eachother, roll over the ref (and bitch about it), exchange rollup pinning predicaments, and finish with the winner spanking the loser.
On the upside...props to Torrie Wilson for delivering a quality Cross Body off the top rope.
Cruiserweight Open: Gotta love the Cruiserweights. Considering the format of the match, it became very interesting to watch. Plus, all the wrestlers were flowing well with eachother. They were hitting a ton of great moves. They were on time and whatnot. The match was quality. The only gripe, if you care enough about it, is that Chavo won by cheating.
Goldberg/Lesnar: This match wasn't as good as I expected it to be. But it was still good. The crowd was really into it. And their hostility toward Lesnar made things extremely interesting. That was actually the first time I heard that Brock was considering leaving for the NFL. Anyway, after all the yelling, pacing, and lockups, Goldberg and Lesnar had a quality, hard-hitting match. You gotta love two Spears, a Jackhammer and an F5. Plus, Austin stunned both of them! I don't know why nobody is willing to mention such a great upside to the match. Well actually, I do. But I'll get to that later.
Victoria/Molly: Victoria retained and Molly got shaved bald. That's entertaining right there, I don't care what anyone says. I wanted Kurt to walk out for his match and just look right at Molly and laugh.
Eddie/Kurt: For the love of God, why wouldn't anyone mention this excellent match? These two guys are two of the most technically skilled wrestlers in the company, and the world for that matter. For 20-25 minutes, these two fought so hard and so well. It was a straight up fight with no interference, and in the end, Eddie got the best possible revenge on Kurt for all the trouble he'd gone through...he lied, cheated, and stole to beat Kurt and keep his title. And the untying the boot trick was really clever too. Props for that.
Kane/Taker: Like I said, did you need Jesus to fight the match instead? Did you want Taker to go all the way back to the Phenom persona? As much as some people might want that, it just wouldn't make any sense. He's been Bad Ass/Big Evil since 2000. It would be really strange to just go all the way back to what he was 10 years ago. I figured he would put together a comined look of Phenom and Big Evil, which he did. He kept the leather pants and the shoulder strap shirt, and added a hat and trenchcoat. The entrance with the druids and Paul Bearer, and especially the camera shot of Taker standing at the top of the ramp was absolutely chilling. Kane gave incredible reactions to the whole thing. And then the match itself was worthy of all the hype. Kane was still able to hold his own, so he didn't look weak. But in the end, Taker hit that Tombstone and sealed his 12th WM win. Still UNDEFEATED!
Main Event: This was an incredible match with a great story. All through the match, each guy was saving another from taking a loss. The match stayed in the ring for the most part. There were a ton of near falls, many big saves, a little cohesiveness between HHH and HBK, and a super-long Crossface on Triple H. And Triple H tapped! I've never seen that before. Anybody should be able to be happy for Benoit for all his hard work finally paying off. He deserves to be champion, plain and simple. He'll be a great champion and will have many great matches in the future. The celebration with Eddie and the confetti made it all even sweeter.
In addition, all the backstage moments were so much fun and so entertaining: the Evolution promo, Rock pumping up Foley, Coach finding Heenan and Okerlund in a closet with Moolah and Mae Young, etc. They kept on entertaining all through the night, even in the breaks between matches.
So I think I've figured out what the problem is. I honestly think that some fans feel they are expected to complain, and are expected to focus only on the negatives of a show. Dennis, Duffy, Swany, you couldn't possibly be so disgusted by EVERY aspect of this show. Those guys are working hard and producing quality entertainment. It just seems that bitching about all the flaws has become a trend instead of embracing the positives.
Another problem is that some people have a problem of getting high expectations based on rumors that are unlikely to be true. It's ridiculous how many people were banking on Bret Hart getting involved in the main event. And then when he doesn't (which should've been expected anyway), everyone bitches and says they're disappointed. Hell, a few friends of mine all predicted that Jeff Hardy was going to be a late entry into the Cruiserweight Open and that he was going to win it. Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? They all wanted it to happen so much that they decided to believe there was no way it wouldn't happen. Chavo wins and they say the match sucked. So stupid.
Well, I've written almost an entire novel here and my fingers are starting to hurt. Anyway, that's my two cents for now. |
