David Beckham is taking the Worthington Cup Final very seriously as he revealed that his friendships with Liverpool’s England stars will be forgotten on Sunday.
Beckham is friends with several Liverpool players, especially England regulars like Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen and Emile Heskey, but he admits that will count for little after the kick-off at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday.
"You meet up with these players and you are in the same team but after that when you play them in the Premier League it doesn't matter," said Beckham. "Whether you are as friendly as you are with them, it is still an important game."
The Red Devils will be looking to carry their recent Champions League form into the final and Sir Alex Ferguson’s side will go into the game as firm favourites, but the England skipper believes that current form counts for very little in a final.
"That all goes out of the window in a cup final," he added. "You could be playing a team from the bottom of the league but it doesn't matter when people are fighting to win things and to stay in leagues - that goes out of the window."
"We have had two days of extra rest than Liverpool but we have got players who are fighting to get back fit and at the moment it is not looking good, but we will see.
"People know how important United-Liverpool games are and the players know how important it is not just to the club but to the fans.
"They will be up for it and out having a good day and looking forward to the whole stage.
"They are games you always want to be involved in. I think we would go out and enjoy the occasion anyway, it is a cup final, it's against Liverpool and that says it all." |
