So many ties could go either way after the first leg! It just proves how close this tournament is likely to be. I think the only side that might be heading out already is Steaua. I can't see them recovering a 2 goal deficit to Valencia or keeping a clean sheet at home.

Thursday 17th February
Aachen .v. AZ Alkmaar
Basel .v. Lille
CSKA Moscow .v. Benfica
Dynamo Kiev .v. Villarreal
Fenerbache .v. Zaragoza
Grazer AK .v. Middlesbrough
Heerenveen .v. Newcastle United
Olympiakos .v. Sochaux

Thursday 17th February
Dynamo Kiev 0-0 Villarreal

Grazer AK 0-0 Middlesbrough - Half-time

More close action. I fancy Villarreal to progress with a narrow win in their home leg.

Middlesbrough had the lead twice; it's just a shame they couldn't hold onto it both times. At least they have the away goals advantage.

I was surprised to see CSKA beat Benfica 2-0 thouugh.

Thursday 17th February
Aachen 0-0 AZ Alkmaar
Basel 0-0 Lille
Heerenveen 1-2 Newcastle United
Olympiakos 1-0 Sochaux

16 matches .. 8 draws (Five 0-0's!) .. 6 wins by one goal .. 2 wins by two goals .. this is indeed tight!

Newcastle needed second-half goals from Alan Shearer and Lee Bowyer to come from a goal down. I think they're the definite favourites to progress from their tie now. I'm happy to see both English clubs in with a great chance.

Impressive turnaround by Newcastle but typical Bowyer scores a good goal and four minutes later, he is sent off
