Group Phase 5 (A-D)
Group A
Basel 1-0 Feyenoord
Hearts 0-1 Ferencvaros

1. Feyenoord. 7.
2. Schalke. 7.
3. Basel. 7.

4. Ferencvaros. 4.
5. Hearts. 3.

No luck for Hearts as they go down 1-0 at home to Ferenvcaros. Not even a win would have helped them as long as Basel had still won against Feyenoord.

Group B
Parma 3-2 Besiktas
Standard Liege 1-7 Athletic Bilbao

1. Athletic Bilbao. 9.
2. Steaua Bucharest. 6.
3. Parma. 6.

4. Besiktas. 4.
5. Standard Liege. 4.

Those lucky Italians. They've been doing poorly in the group stage and in the league, but when they needed to win they managed it. I expected Besiktas to be able to get a draw.

Group C
Club Brugge 1-1 Real Zaragoza
Utrecht 1-2 Austria Wien

1. Dnipro. 9.
2. Real Zaragoza. 7.
3. Austria Vienna. 7.

4. Club Brugge. 5.
5. Utrecht. 0.

When all the other Dutch clubs have been doing well, Utrecht have been the team to beat in this group. To be fair, I thought they would have been able to get a result against Vienna, which might have sent Brugge through instead.

Group D
Newcastle United 1-1 Sporting Lisbon
Sochaux 1-0 Panionios

1. Newcastle United. 10.
2. Sochaux. 9.
3. Sporting Lisbon. 7.

4. Panionios. 3.
5. Dinamo Tbilisi. 0

In the end, this group looked quite easy for the three teams that qualified. Newcastle are one of two teams who remained undefeated throughout the group stage (the other being Villarreal) and are the only team to score more than 9 points!

Seeding for 3rd Round Draw
1st Place: Athletic Bilbao, AZ Alkmaar, Dnipro, Feyenoord, Lille, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Stuttgart.

3rd Place: Aachen, Austria Vienna, Basel, Grazer AK, Heerenveen, Parma, Partizan Belgrade, Sporting Lisbon.

2nd Place: Auxerre, Benfica, Real Zaragoza, Schalke, Sevilla, Sochaux, Steaua Bucharest, Villarreal.

CL Drop-outs: Ajax, CSKA Moscow, Dynamo Kiev, Fenerbache, Olympiakos, Panathiniakos, Shakhtar Donetsk, Valencia.

The 1st places teams will be drawn against the 3rd placed teams.
The 2nd places teams will be drawn against the CL drop-outs.

No teams from the same country shall be drawn against each other for this round. The 4th round will also be drawn in advance, so I guess this rule can't apply there.

3rd Round Draw
Aachen .v. AZ Alkmaar (6)
Ajax .v. Auxerre (10)
Austria Vienna .v. Athletic Bilbao (7)
Basel .v. Lille (3)
CSKA Moscow .v. Benfica (11)
Dynamo Kiev .v. Villarreal (16)
Fenerbache .v. Real Zaragoza (12)
Grazer AK .v. Middlesbrough (1)
Heerenveen .v. Newcastle United (2)
Olympiakos .v. Sochaux (15)
Panathiniakos .v. Sevilla (13)
Parma .v. Stuttgart (4)
Partizan Belgrade .v. Dnipro (8)
Shakhtar Donetsk .v. Schalke (14)
Sporting Lisbon .v. Feyenoord (5)
Valencia .v. Steaua Bucharest (9)

Some interesting looking ties.

Middlesbrough and Newcastle have been given good draws. I believe both should be able to make it through to the next round, and of course, the away goal in the first leg would help! Aachen finally have a decent test, against Alkmaar. Dnipro - Partizan .. that should be a great tie. Both teams are considered as a danger to the top teams, so I wonder what they'll produce against each other. Sporting Lisbon - Feyenoord, Parma - Stuttgart, Olympiakos - Sochaux, Panathiniakos - Sevilla .. plenty of great ties!

4th Round Draw
(1) .v. (5) - Possibly Boro .v. Feyenoord!
(13) .v. (4)
(9) .v. (16) - Valencia .v. Villarreall would be great
(3) .v. (10)
(15) .v. (2) - Possible rematch between Sochaux and Newcastle
(14) .v. (6)
(8) .v. (11)
(7) .v. (12) - Possible all Spanish tie

As I've said before, I think the Group Stage has made the UEFA Cup more interesting to watch.

Wednesday 16th February
Partizan Belgrade 2-2 Dnipro

A healthy result for Dnipro. They were twice down by a goal, but came back both times to give themselves a great chance of progressing. They'll have the away goals advantage and a strong home advantage when the return leg is played.

Hoera for Ajax!

Wednesday 16th February
Austria Vienna P-P Athletic Bilbao
Sporting Lisbon 2-1 Feyenoord
Valencia 2-0 Steaua Bucharest

Despite Feyenoord's loss, they do have a chance. History has proven the away goal can be very important.
