Then of course the change in the rules later in the competition really does help.

Group Phase - Matchday 2
Group A
Ferencvaros 1-1 Feyenoord
Hearts 0-1 Schalke

Feyenoord and Schalke top the group with 4 points each. Basel and Ferencvaros (who have both played 1 game) have 1 point, but Hearts look out with 0 points.

Group B
Besiktas 3-1 Athletic
Parma 1-0 Steaua

Besiktas, Steaua, Athletic and Parma are all on 3 points - but it's Besiktas who have played the game less! Standard are on 0 points, with 1 match played.

Group C
Austria Wien 1-0 Real Zaragoza
Utrecht 1-2 Dnipro

Dnipro surprisingly top this group with 6 points. Zaragoza are 2nd with 3 points from 2 matches, with Austria Wien on 3 points after 1 match. Brugge are on 0 points along with Utrecht, but Brugge have only played one match so far.

Group D
Newcastle United 2-0 Dinamo Tbilisi
Sporting Lisbon 4-1 Panionios

Newcastle are in complete control of this group atm. They have an identical record to Middlesbrough - played 2, won 2, scored 3, conceded 0. Sporting Lisbon and Sochaux both have 3 points - after 1 match. Tbilisi and Panionios both have 0 after 2 matches. This group could effectively be over after the next matchday.

Group E
Middlesbrough 2-0 Lazio
Partizan Belgrade 4-0 Egaleo

Looks like Middlesbrough have a great chance of getting through, espcially with Lazio sitting on only a point. Looks like their league form does show in the UEFA Cup. Partizan have 3 points from 1 match and Villarreal 1 from 1 match. Egaleo have 0 out of 2 matches.
Realistically, Boro just need one more point to go through.

Group F
AZ Alkmaar 2-0 Auxerre
Grazer AK 3-1 Amica Wronki

Grazer head the group on 4 points, with Rangers and Alkmaar on 3 - both having played only 1 match. Auxerre only have 1 point, with Amica Wronki on 0. Auxerre have a tough task to qualify from this group now.

Group G
Dinamo Zagreb 6-1 Beveren
Stuttgart 3-0 Benfica

Stuttgart are in firm control of Group G - they have a GD of +7 and 6 points from two matches. Zagreb and Benfica are both on 3 - Zagreb having played only once. Heerenveen have 0 points from their match, while Beveren have 0 - I think we can safely say they are out.

Group H
Lille 2-1 Zenit
Sevilla 2-0 Aachen

Zenit, Sevilla, Lille and Aachen all have 3 points - with Sevilla having only played once. AEK Athens have 0 points - also having played just once.

Group Phase - Matchday 3
Group A
Basel 1-2 Hearts
Schalke 2-0 Ferencvaros

Schalke have qualified for the next round. Mathematically, they can still be caught by both Basel and Ferencvaros, but those two teams still haven't played each other, so only one can catch Schalke. Hearts can't catch Schalke, so Schalke can't finish lower than 3rd. Hearts' last game is at home to Ferencvaros, so there's still a great chance for them to qualify.

Group B
Standard 2-1 Parma
Steaua 2-1 Besiktas

Steaua have the advantage, but they have played 3 games. They're on 6 points, while all other teams in the group have 3 points. Parma (5th) are the other team to have played 3 times. Out of the other teams, Besiktas and Athletic are in the top 3, but there isn't a lot of difference in GD.

Group C
Club Brugge 1-0 Utrecht
Dnipro 1-0 Austria Wien

Dnipro are through! They've won all 3 out of their 3 matches and are 6 points ahead of 2nd place. Utrecht have also played 3, but don't have a point to show from any of their games. Real Zaragoza and Club Brugge are the two teams on 3 points that are in the top 3, but again there's not much to choose between their GD's.

Group D
Dinamo Tbilisi 0-4 Sporting Lisbon
Sochaux 0-4 Newcastle United

Newcastle United are the 2nd team to have 9 points after 3 matches (and the last) .. and they've done it without conceding a goal! They finish the group against Sporting Lisbon at home - potentially the best match of the group as Lisbon are undefeated after 2, with a GD of +7 (the same as Newcastle) Sochaux are on 3 points after 2 matches, Panionios and Dinamo Tbilisi are on 0 - not scored, with a GD of -8 (and Tbilisi were thought to be a dangerous team ) I think that Sochaux will claim 3rd place.

Group E
Lazio 2-2 Partizan Belgrade
Villarreal 2-0 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough may have been defeated for the first time in this group, but looking at the table, they're still through. They can't be caught by Lazio and even if Egaleo win both of their final games, they're unlikely to have a better GD than 'Boro. Lazio are likely to be out.

Group F
Amica Wronki 1-3 AZ Alkmaar
Rangers 3-0 Grazer AK

Rangers and AZ Alkmaar look good to go through. Both have played twice and won twice. Grazer trail them by two points - but have played a game more. Auxerre are on 1 point after 1 match, while Amica Wronki are out on 0 after 3 matches.

Group G
Benfica 2-0 Dinamo Zagreb
Heerenveen 1-0 Stuttgart

Stuttgart and Benfica head the group on 6 points after 3 matches. Dinamo Zagreb and Heerenveen both have 3 after 2, while Beveren look down and out even though they have 2 matches left - 0 points, -9 GD.

Group H
AEK Athens 1-2 Lille
Zenit 1-1 Sevilla

Lille lead the way with 6 points after 3 matches, with Zenit 2nd on 4 points after 3 matches. Sevilla are level with Zenit, but have that crucial game in hand. Aachen have 3 points and AEK Athens are on none.

Teams through to the next round
Schalke, Dnipro, Newcastle United, Sporting Lisbon, Middlesbrough, Rangers, Fenerbache (CL)

Teams knocked out
Utrecht, Dinamo Tbilisi, Amica Wronki, Beveren.

I'm surprised how well and how bad some teams are doing. It's good to see AZ is also playing amazing in Europe. Rangers - AZ is THE match I'm looking forward to.

This group stage is most definitely making the UEFA Cup more interesting this year. One of the things that has taken my interest in particular is that there are only 2 Italian teams - Lazio & Parma - who are currently 4th and 5th in their groups respectively. Both look like they won't make it into the next stage. They could win their last matches and still be out. With the way the CL tables are atm, there could be no Italian teams in the Last 32 of the UEFA Cup.. (which will be damaging to the Co-Efficient)

We've only got 2 English clubs in the UEFA Cup at this stage too, although both are faring much better than the Italians. Liverpool and Arsenal could yet join them if either fails to reach the CL 2nd Round.

The 4 Spanish teams are faring much better - all having played only twice, all having won at least once. They might yet be joined by 2 Spanish clubs from the CL (Valencia and Real Madrid) if results don't go their way (which would leave only 1 Spanish club in the last 16 of the CL!)

French, German and Dutch teams are faring well during this stage - I could see the winner of the UEFA Cup coming from one of those countries.

I think one thing thats holding me back from taking much notice of this league is the lack of coverage, I dont have ITV2 or Channel 5 so I cant view it.

I haven't watched one UEFA Cup match this season, but I've been keeping myself up-to-date with every match on activescores. I think the one thing that really keeps my interest though, is that I'm doing very well in a UEFA Cup PL, so I want to keep doing well there.

I find when I check the scores on teletext, they tend to solely focus on the British teams which I dont like, I like to know how all the teams are doing.
