Thursday 10th March
Austria Vienna 1-1 Real Zaragoza
Lille 0-1 Auxerre
Middlesbrough 2-3 Sporting Lisbon
Sevilla 0-0 Parma

Most of the ties played later on Thursday are still quite balanced - Parma will be annoyed that they didn't get an away goal though. With 3 away goals, you'd expect to see Sporting Lisbon go through. Middlesbrough did score both of their goals without a lot of effort though, so it appears that they could get a few in Portugal. If Boro fight hard enough, you never know.

What's happening with Dutch teams? PSV already advance to the Quarter Finals and it seems AZ will be too.

The Dutch teams are simply becoming very good in Europe again. Whoever they draw in the Quarter-Finals though, it'll be a very tough test. PSV could easily come up against Juventus, AC Milan, Bayern Munich or Chelsea.

There's no doubt PSV will get a tougher draw than AZ. But we remember Ajax a couple of years back against AC Milan. When a team's on a roll, anything can happen.

4th Round, 1st leg
Steaua Bucharest .v. Villarreal

4th Round, 2nd leg
Wednesday 16th March
AZ Alkmaar .v. Shakhtar Donetsk
Newcastle United .v. Olympiakos

Thursday 17th March
Auxerre .v. Lille
CSKA Moscow .v. Partizan Belgrade
Parma .v. Sevilla
Sporting Lisbon .v. Middlesbrough
Zaragoza .v. Austria Vienna

Sunday 20th March
Villarreal .v. Steaua Bucharest

AZ Alkmaar and Newcastle United should be able to make it through, barring any very surprising results. The other ties could go either way though and will be very interesting to follow! I'm hoping Middlesbrough can pull off something great in Portugal.

Here's something I found odd..

http://www.uefa.com/uefa/news/Kind=4...Id=182714.html

In the UEFA Cup match calendar, there are two 1st knockout rounds. One before the group stages and one after.. Shouldn't the matches that were played in February simply be called the '3rd round'!? .. hence this one being called the 4th round, which is what I named it as it makes sense.

4th Round, 2nd leg
16/03/2005
AZ Alkmaar (5)2-1(2) Shakhtar Donetsk
Newcastle United (7)4-0(1) Olympiakos

Commanding victories in the end for both AZ Alkmaar and Newcastle.

I'm hoping Villarreal will go through in the second leg of their tie on Sunday, but it would have been very handy if they'd scored an away goal tonight.

AZ are looking pretty good right now. As for Newcastle, I think they'll make the last 4 again at least.

Just like the first leg, AZ played really well again. Van Gaalen's goal was awesome! I hope they don't draw Newcastle United.
