Is there too much luck in soccer? - Eternal Allegiance

Alright well note that this question is coming from someone who lives in a country where soccer isn't very big and I usually only get into it once every four years when the World Cup is on or if Australia's playing - but anyway it strikes me as a game where there's an awful lot of luck and quite often the best team doesn't win...

I guess it does make it a bit exciting but I just find it pretty unfair when a team can be playing really well but lose because of a bad decision or a lucky kick or something. It's pretty obvious at the world cup where there are plenty of 'underdog' teams who are winning based on luck more often than not.

Just interested to hear what more dedicated followers of the sport think - soccer seems a lot more random and based on luck than other sports... personally I like to see the best team win.

Soccer = Psychology.
Basketball = Luck.
Baseball = Skill.
Football = Physical Ability.

I don't think football is more based on luck than other sports ... you need luck in each sport and you need skill in each sport ... the perfect combination of both gives you the victory

i think a great many skills for footy....i mean u need the fitness first.....and skill is being able to tackle without getting a red/yellow, or to be great on the ball, speed, etc. Baseball is luck....hit the ball and run.....see how far u go.

Baseball is skill, knowing when to hit the ball and where to have it hit on your bat. Soccer is psychology, considering what your opposer is going to do, and which way that goalie may or may not go to block your shot. Basketball is luck, because you must find that perfect angle, and even then it may or may not go in. Football is physical ability, because you need strength and speed to mow down people or run with the ball.

yeh but u still gotta agree u need skill for 'soccer' (when i said football in my previous post i meant soccer. we call it football in england). I mean have u seen Owen and Ronaldo with the ball.......when they do all that stuff with their feet, that my friend, is pure skill.

It's not really skill versus psychology, because when you're trying to get past defenders you have to second guess them whether you're a star player or not.

There is skill.. but it pales in comparison to psychology. Just like in Basketball there is skill, but it's nothing compared to luck, or in football etc.

I'm only saying which one basically becomes the major edge.

oh you mean which one is the main thing involved in it....i get ya. Well i thik skill is still the main thing, but thats just me.
