Venus Williams left the tennis court to model sister Serena's first fashion collection of formal, sport and swim wear, launched late Wednesday in Miami Beach.

The line, called Aneres, which is "Serena" spelled backward, consists of 41 styles, which Venus modeled mostly in purple and green.

"I'm excited about it, and I'm working with Nike right now, so I'm actually designing my own new line that's coming out in January, so I'm doing two design jobs," Serena told AFP.

"I love design and I have some much time to do it."

Serena said of Venus, "She's always my best model, she's a great model, she always looks good." However, Venus was not tempted to model full-time. I mean, it was fun tonight, I'll do it again for Serena," she said. "Whatever for my sister, she wanted me to be in the show so I'm in the show."

Venus said her mind was on the Australian Open in January.
Next year is starting already and I have a really big event coming up in four weeks," Venus said. "I'm getting ready for that right now."

World number 24 Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic said Tuesday he would not be taking part in the Australian Open this coming January because of fatigue, and increasing family commitments.

The Open will be held from January 17-30 in Melbourne, but Novak said: "I don't know when I'll be back on the circuit. I've had quite a difficult season, I need some rest at the moment and so I will surely not make it to Australia."

The 29-year-old Czech, a father of three, even said it was time to reduce the number of professional appearances at tournaments.

"As of now I want to compete less. Family has to come first for me."

Reigning Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova overpowered American Venus Williams Sunday in an exhibition match in northern Thailand overshadowed by last week's tsunamis that ravaged the kingdom and much of Asia.

The two stars appeared all business in the opening games, matching each other's trademark booming serves and groundstrokes with the Russian teenager prevailing in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

Sharapova wore a black ribbon on her white uniform in memory of the massive number of dead from the disaster, which includes nearly 5,000 in Thailand. On her arrival days earlier she pledged 10,000 dollars to assist the tsunami victims in the kingdom.

The gesture earned widespread praise in the kingdom and was personally accepted by Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra. "I love Thailand," a smiling Williams told the crowd of about 4,000 after the match. "I've had a great time, you guys have been wonderful."

Neither mentioned the tsunamis in their post-match addresses, but on her arrival Thursday Sharapova reportedly said she was "devastated by the disaster." Although a gala dinner to be held for the players was cancelled out of respect for the unprecedented loss of life, organisers determined it was best if the exhibition between two of the world's most colourful characters in the game went ahead.
