Marat Safin's stirring rehabilitation from an injury-ravaged 2003 continued on Friday when he reached the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters as Britain's Tim Henman paid a heavy price for honouring a promise to a friend.

Former world number one Safin beat Spain's Alberto Martin for the sixth time in six meetings to reach the semi-finals with his 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win giving him a last-four showdown against third seeded Argentinian Guillermo Coria who beat seventh seeded countryman David Nalbandian 6-4, 6-3.

Henman, seeded six and a 2002 semi-finalist, went down 6-3, 6-1 to Germany's Rainer Schuettler and the fourth seed will now take on former French Open champion, and 1998 winner here, Carlos Moya for a place in the final.

World number two Kim Clijsters made a winning return for Belgium in the Fed Cup against Croatia on Saturday though both Japan and Australia had trouble, dropping 2-0 behind in their away matches.

Belgium's Clijsters, out for five weeks with an injured left wrist, celebrated her comeback with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win over Jelena Kostanic in this World Group first round match.

"I'm very happy," Clijsters said after the match.

"I knew my rhythm was off so I was not surprised I struggled. After more than a month away, it's impossible to come straight back and perform at the same level."

Clijsters ran away with the first set 6-1 though struggled in the second set and Kostanic shot to a 3-0 lead. The Belgium levelled at 4-4 but could not stop Kostanic winning it 6-4.

In the end, the final set became a mere formality for Clijsters as she romped through the third set 6-1

Monaco Masters Tournement Final:

Coria (3) - who's in that Final for the second year in a row.
Schuettler (4) - a player who sometimes can playing amazing (Australian Open 2003) and other times he gets defeated easily.

We'll see what this match brings us.

Good to hear Clijsters is back in action.

Not much excitement ... at least not from both sides. Coria didn't have any problems with Schuettler.

6-2, 6-1, 6-3.

ATP Munchen:

Verkerk advances to the Quarter Finals. He defeated Pashansky ( ) with 7-6, 7-6.

#1 Seed Schuettler is later playing Tommy Haas, that could be a nice match.

WTA Warschau:

Daniela Hantuchova is out ...

Venus Williams is through to the next round after winning from Zuluaga with 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.

John, do you know what Kim Clijsters her first, official tournament will be?
