And there's the first surprise, seed #2 didn't survive the first round. He was defeated by Alex Corretja with 6-2 ans 6-3.

Moya, Nalbandian, Hewitt all advance. And so does Martin Verkerk, seed #14. He was too strong for Portas, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-3.
