Swedish Davis Cup captain Mats Wilander says tennis should be dropped as an Olympic event. Is it time to axe the sport from the Games?

Speaking in a Swedish newspaper on Monday, Wilander claimed that the traditional Grand Slams take precedence over the Olympics for many players.

The 2000 Sydney Olympics were noticeable for the absence of players such as Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Gustavo Kuerten.

Wilander has suggested the alternative of playing Olympic tennis in teams, similar to the Davis Cup or the Federation Cup, instead of having singles and doubles.

I'm more interested in the Grand Slams than the Olympics. I don't even know how things are going then. I love tennis and I love to watch a Grand Slam.

So for me, it isn't really necessary that tennis stays an Olympic sport. I also think this won't be changed, tennis will stay an Olympic sport.

I think that the grand slams take more priority definately. It should be dropped.

I think tennis as an olympic sport is a good idea, many people are interested in it and i ams ure people would love to have a gold medalist like sampras or whoever it gonna be then

normally the top players drop out cos they want to win grand slams..

I agree.. but more money - grand slams..seems an easy decision for me

The fact that a Grand Slam is every year (to be exact 4 in a year) and the Olympics only every 2 (or 4, not sure

) years plays also a role I think.

yep, its an easy decision for the players as well, they just take the tournament where they can win the most

And get the most publicity.. plus their rankings go up from grand slams
