Micks would be interesting too but Keanes is the best around. I enjoyed Alex Fergusons and Did Alan Shearer put one out?

The highs and lows of Mick McCarthy's six-year reign as Republic of Ireland manager.

Overall record: P68 | W29 | D20 | L19

1996, 2 February - Leaves Millwall to take over from Jack Charlton as Republic of Ireland boss.

1996, 27 March - The Republic lose 2-0 to Russia at Landsdowne Road in McCarthy's first match in charge.

1999, 10 October - A place at Euro 2000 is just 12 seconds away when Goran Stavrevski equalises for Macedonia in Skopje, and the Republic are consigned to the play-offs.

After drawing 1-1 with Turkey in Dublin, an ill-tempered 0-0 draw in Bursa sees McCarthy's men knocked out.

2000, 8 October -The World Cup campaign begins well as a Matt Holland equaliser in Lisbon gives the Republic a 1-1 draw against Portugal, following a 2-2 draw against Holland in Amsterdam.

2001, 1 September - A play-off place is virtually guaranteed with a magnificent 1-0 win over Holland in Dublin.

2001, 15 November - The Republic seal a place at the World Cup finals with a 1-0 loss against Iran in Tehran, after winning the first leg 2-0 in Dublin.

2002, 5 January - McCarthy is named Irish Sports Personality of the Year.

"All the players are pleased he has decided to stay on for two more years and hopefully we can have another successful qualifying campaign when the European Championship begins," said Keane.

2002, 17 May - The FAI are "delighted" to announce that McCarthy will stay on as coach for at least another two years.

2002, 23 May - Keane is sent home from Japan after falling out with manager Mick McCarthy in a clear-the-air meeting with the whole squad.

"I cannot and will not tolerate being spoken to with that level of abuse being thrown at me, so I sent him home," said McCarthy.

2002, 16 June - The Republic go out of the World Cup on penalties against Spain in the last 16.

The new Irish manager will be in place by 1 February next year, according to the FAI General Secretary. Brendan Menton dismissed speculation that John Aldridge will be offered the job. He insisted that the FAI had not approached anybody and that a shortlist had not been drawn up.

John Aldridge and Joe Kinnear have both indicated they are interested in replacing Mick McCarthy as Republic of Ireland manager, although David O'Leary has ruled himself out of contention. McCarthy resigned yesterday after six-and-a-half years in charge.

Aldridge said: "I've always stated that I would be delighted to manage my country and it is a fantastic job for anyone to be associated with. There will be a lot of good managers put their name forward so we will have to wait and see. I know all the lads very well indeed but I don't really want to push myself forward and plug myself now - I'll do it in the right manner when the time is right."

Joe Kinnear turned the job down after Jack Charlton's resignation, but the boss of Second Division Luton Town said: "It's one of the top jobs in international football. I'd certainly take if it came my way again."

O'Leary rules himself out

David O'Leary has already ruled himself out of the running. "I want to manage my country, but if I was asked now then I think I would have to decline because I want to get back into mainstream, day-to-day management with a football club itself.

"When I have that out of my system I hope the FAI will come and ask me then. That's not for many years to come, but I would like to finish my management career off by managing the national team," added the former Leeds boss.

Bookmakers currently have Joe Kinnear the 7-4 favourite, ahead of John Toshack at 2-1 with John Aldridge listed at 9-4. Roger Lemerre, the coach sacked after France's poor World Cup performance is 16-1, Ronnie Whelan is 20-1 and Kenny Dalglish 25-1.

Irish newspapers have been delivering their verdict on the departure of Mick McCarthy as Republic of Ireland manager. The Irish Times carries the headline, "McCarthy draws the inevitable conclusion". According to Tom Humphries, a series of bad choices proved fatal. Emmett Malone says that the move paves the way for Keane to return. In the report from last night's press conference, the headline reads "No sense of betrayal, just pride". Mark Lawrenson writes that "the manager did a bloody good job".

The front page headline in the Sun reads: "Keano's not my problem anymore...now Mick's off for a pint". Its back page says: "Mick: I've quit for Ireland - McCarthy puts country first". The paper says it only cost the FAI €50,000 to pay off McCarthy and money will be no object when it comes to getting a new man.

Meanwhile, the Mirror says "Roy 1 Mick 0 - Keane has last laugh as FAI give McCarthy tiny pay off". The back page headline claims: "It's Aldo's". The story reveals that John Aldridge would love to manage Ireland and the FAI will offer him the job.

The Star's front page headline is "You Win Keano", expressing the view of Jack Charlton. The Star also has Eamon Dunphy "exclusively" revealing that Mick will not be missed. According to Paul Lennon on the back page, the first task of the next boss will be to get Roy Keane back wearing the green jersey.

Well I have to say Mick did a great job except for the Roy Keane problem. he rescued the team and brought us to 14th in the world. When he took over the team from Jack Charlton, Ireland team was in a bad state..
