Mick McCarthy has resigned as manager of Republic of Ireland.

The Football Association of Ireland said a compensation deal had been agreed between the organisatin and McCarthy

The move follows the dramatic World Cup spat between McCarthy and the team's former captain, Roy Keane.

The decision opens the door for Keane to return to the national side.

McCarthy has lost his first two Euro 2004 qualifiers and has been under intense pressure since Keane's dramatic dismissal from this summer's World Cup squad.

Here is a report from an irish site.

Mick McCarthy’s reign as Republic of Ireland manager has come to an end with the news that he has negotiated a compensation package with the FAI and will leave his post immediately. McCarthy’s contract was not due to expire until February 2004, however following poor results against Russia and Switzerland in the recent European Championship qualifiers, and the loss of public support, McCarthy has agreed to vacate the position he has occupied since March 1996.

McCarthy is due in Dublin tonight to finalise formalities with the FAI and the search for his successor is expected to begin straight away.

Ireland's next match is a friendly away to Greece later in the month and Irish under-21 manager Don Givens is expected to take over in a caretaker capacity.
