Craig Bellamy has been urged to stay at Celtic, even if it means the Welsh international has to take a pay-cut.
The 25-year-old has become a fans favourite in his short time at Parkhead after joining on loan following his high-profile falling out at Newcastle. His loan deal expires at the end of the season, but it is almost certain that Newcastle will look to sell him and team-mate Paul Lambert is hoping he will be returning to Scotland.
Lambert said: "Money wouldn’t be an issue with Craig, although I don’t know the ins-and-outs of what’s happening with Newcastle.
"He must know if he stays, he will have an unreal following. Every stadium you go to is full. He could maybe go to other teams that can offer more money but it would be a different atmosphere.
It would be a big loss for us but also for Craig. He would definitely miss the spirit and size of the support we have. They are phenomenal. Lambert compared Bellamy, who scored a hat-trick against Dundee last week, to Henrik Larsson, who left Celtic after seven years to join Barcelona in the summer.
"He can do no wrong. He has invigorated the team in a way Henrik was capable of doing. The crowd love him as well. Whoever was coming as a striker was never going to live up to being a new Henrik, you have to be yourself.
It was a difficult job for Henri Camara but no matter what people say about him he scored goals. Eight goals in 12 starts is quite high. Craig is a different character but he has done great. Hopefully he’ll be part of something successful this season and in the years to come." |
