Winter Break?

The SPL is to consider re-introducing a winter break in Scotland’s top league. A winter break initially began in the 1998-99 season but ended in 2002-03.

Both Old Firm managers have publicly called for the move and a working party will consider the proposal. Figures such as Celtic assistant John Robertson and Aberdeen legend Willie Miller will be involved.

An SPL spokesman said: "They put forward their recommendations for the (SPL) board to consider. They look into a range of matters from a purely football point of view and one of the issues is the structure of the season, which includes the winter break.

"And the next time the FWG meets is in January when numerous topics will be discussed, but the final decision is with the board who meet on 21 January next year."

SPL clubs wishing to bring in new players will not be able to do business until FIVE days after the transfer window opens due to administrative staff going on holiday.

Scottish football’s governing body, the SFA, will operate ’emergency’ numbers from midnight on December 31st to register players with them. But clubs are also required to register with the SPL and the league body closes at 5pm that day and does not re-open until January 5th.

The SFA’s Registration boss Sandy Bryson explained: "The problem for SPL clubs as such is that while they are able to register new signings with us, it will not be possible to do so with the SPL. Therefore, the player will not be eligible to play until after January 5. That is the problem with the SPL running a registration department in tandem with ourselves."

Rangers, for example, may be forced to hold off Bojan Djordjic’s debut and Dunfermline could face similar problems if Lee Makel returns to Scotland in the coming days.

Saturday 1st January 2005
Dundee Utd .v. Rangers
Dunfermline .v. Dundee

Rangers will have the chance to go top tonight. They should be able to do it, especially as Dundee Utd are bottom. The other clash is a relegation match.

Sunday 2nd January
Celtic .v. Livingston
Hibernian .v. Hearts

If Rangers do take top place from Celtic tonight, then Celtic should easily take it back tommorow. With Livingston down in 10th, Celtic should win by a few. Hibernian will be hoping to extend their lead over Aberdeen in 3rd.

Monday 3rd January
Inverness .v. Kilmarnock
Motherwell .v. Aberdeen

Middle of the table clashes.
